Richmond, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the county seat of Travis County and was founded in 1836 by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in what is now Austin, then part of Mexico. The city became an American metropolis after being annexed by Austin in 1957 and becoming the seat of government for all Travis County except portions that are located within Austin metropolitan area. Richmond has a population of 175,839 as of 2010, making it the third largest municipality inAustin after Austin and New Braunfels. The original land grant for Richmond included 1/2 mile (1 km) on each side of Main Street between Second and Third Streets, bounded by what are now Bedford Road and Slaughter Drive today. In 1836, Jno.[...] Richmond began to prosper as an agricultural community with cattle Rancho El Paso de los Angeles lying at its feet on the north bank of San Antonio Creek just east of present day downtown Richmond. This rancho was one of many acquired by early settlers from various parts of Mexico during their first steps westward into this new country land which had been discovered since 1545 when Juan Rodríguez Caballero explored routes across North America along the lower Rio Grande Valley through Tamaulipas provinceanchored off shore around Cape Stennis [now Corpus Christi],Mexico’s southernmost point." In 1837–38 Spanish explorer Agustín de la Hoz traveled through central Texas meeting similar Scots-Irish immigrants living near modern day Richmond who were already working with their hands on ranches such as Rancho El Paso de los Angeles. La Hoya reported back to his superiors that these people were “excellentIndian farmers” who spoke no other language but Spanish so he named them "Nueva Austria" or "New Austria". At this time there still existed two governments in Mexico: based in Zacatecas City where Catholic priests governed society; under Mexican President Alvarado Porfirio Díaz y Montero; and northern Mexico ruled by King Ferdinand VII who had ceded most Mexican territory east of the Isthmus Of Tehuantepec to United States prior to Mexican independence from Spain on November 15,1821." A group led by Augustus Milam purchased 824 acres (300 ha) including Rancho El Paso de los Angeles from Pedro Gómez Gil en 1840 for $5 per acre ($27/ha). Milam set out to make this land into a successful cotton plantation farming estate covering 5 square miles (16 km2), employing up to 120 slaves divided among ten families plus sixty head workers provided they produced 400 bales (1400 kg) or more per year." The first crop grown on this property was corn which was processed into flour before being sold both domestically and abroad." After milams death his heirs added 300 acres (100 ha) adjoining their cotton plantation called Villa Rica which included rolling meadowland watered by three streams running through deer pastures used for hunting pigs, hogs, rabbits and other wildlife…." By 1850 about ninety percent[of]the citizens were Irish Catholics with about fifty percent black Americans also living among them…..Most businesses continued unchanged until annexation into Austin following annexation battle between Texans Independence Party[ists]and Democratic Unionists…."
