The Richmond, Texas National Guard has been in existence since 1925. The unit was organized as the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment of Texas Infantry on November 3, 1925. It was redesignated the 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment of Texas Infantry on February 27, 1930 and again redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment of Texas Infantry on June 14, 1935. On October 6, 1941 the battalion was re-designated as the 1st Battalion (National Guard), 9th Regiment of Texas Infantry for service in World War II. On September 8, 1945 the battalion was activated and assigned to Fort Bliss Army Air Field to serve in World War II with the Ninth United States Air Force. The battalion's mission was to provide military aviation services for ground troops in Southwest Asia. After V-E Day in 1945 the battalion returned home and disbanded on December 7, 1945 at Fort Bliss Army Air Field. The unit's memory will live on through its members who served during World War II and later fought in Korea and Vietnam.

The Richmond National Guard was organized on December 12, 1941. The unit was originally called the Texas Rangers and served in the Texas Army during World War II. On September 9, 1946, the Richmond National Guard was reorganized as a separate unit and given the name of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department. Richmond is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, on the banks of the Trinity River. It was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1836 and became an important cotton center during the 19th century. Richmond is located in Midland County, about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Dallas and 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Austin. However, only two years later Houston convened a general convention at which he proposed annexing present day Midland County to create a new state called East Texas; but this proposal failed to gain enough support among delegates attendee from rural counties east of Austin who opposed annexation because they feared losing their share in government representation within their new state’s borders – an issue that would continue through much of East Texas’ history.
