Richmond, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Richmond County. The population was 87,721 at the 2010 census, making it the 14th-most populous city in Texas and the second most populous city in New Mexico. It is also one of two cities (the other being Albuquerque) in New Mexico that have both been rated as "Highly Urban" by the National Institute for Economic & Community Research. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted game on an island near what is now downtown Richmond. They soon traded with people from all over South America, Europe and Asia for goods they brought back to their settlements on the mainland. In 1836, James Kenedy founded Santa Fe Trail City which became San Antonio when he sold part of this land to Mexicans under Spanish rule. In 1845, Austin was founded by Colonel John Bremner as the capital of Mexican Alta California Province including parts of today's San Antonio County and Travis County. A year later, on March 30th 1846, Austin became a U.S town when Congress passed an act providing for its organization under Section 5 of title 7 United States Code - only 8 months after Mexico had become a republic! In 1861 secessionists tried unsuccessfully to secede from Confederate America while Richmond continued serving as the capital of Confederate America until 1865; however many businesses belonging to Virginians evacuated before war came along so few stores remain today apart from a couple gas stations and some antique shops (eager collectors will occasionally stumble upon entire rooms or whole buildings filled with slave memorabilia). After Charleston surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 Richmond reverted back to Union control just days before Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House effective May 9th 1865 - effectively ending hostilities in Virginia which lasted 3 years!

Richmond is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, about 20 miles south of Austin. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in Richmond were white Texans who came from East Texas in the 1830s. They built a cabin on the banks of the San Jacinto River and named it Richmond because they found a piece ofoak tree there that had been cut down by Indians. The first school in Richmond was founded in 1836 by subscription and taught reading and writing. In 1840, General Sam Houston's forces burned Richmond to remove all evidence of Mexican occupancy. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down two blocks of business buildings downtown after Union troops captured their camp there during the Battle of Val Verde. One block later, Union troops burned down a grocery store on Elm Street while Confederates inside fought off an attack by Federal troops led by Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan. After the Civil War ended, many Confederate veterans moved back into Virginia and established new communities along the James River near Petersburg. These veterans founded what became known as "The Valley", which stretched from Petersburg north to Martinsville and east to Lynchburg. Many residents from these original Valley communities went on to form what is now known as The Hill Country around Austin. In 1907, Richmond joined Hudspeth County as a result of an annexation decision made by then-Governor Alfred Ladd based upon recommendations from a special commission appointed to study secessionist movements throughout Texas A&M University's southern border region (the so-called "Bexar report"). At its creation, Hudspeth County included all but one mile of present-day Richmond within its boundaries; this left only about 1/3rds of its current population within Richland Parish when it merged with Travis County in 1965%.
