Robinson is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The community lies on a bend in the Brazos River and is located about 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown Austin. The first settlers to live here were Mr. and Mrs. George Hinton who came from Virginia in 1836. They erected a log cabin on the site today known as Hinton's Cabin which still stands. In 1839, John Robinson built his home on what is now Main Street and also future churches such as First Baptist Church and Christ Episcopal Church were built around that time too. Robinson was originally named "Henderson" after Henderson County, Tennessee where he had been born in 1794 but changed it to Robinson because he found people there difficult to understand. When a post office was established here in 1873, it was renamed Henderson for John Robinson who had helped build it years earlier together with his brother Jameson Robinson Sr.. In 1902, the name change again when Putnam Avenue became one of two blocks of Main Street between First and Second Streets following annexation by nearby Round Rock; that block remains today as one of downtown Austin's most popular shopping areas despite its much older namesake*. By 1910 the population had grown so large that the original Henderson Post Office relocated east along Moreland Avenue towards Lamar Boulevard* until it closed in 1913 due to low usage*. Robinson, Texas is a town located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area, and as of 2010 had a population of 103,992. The name "Robinson" was given to the community by General James Robinson during his 1849 march through central Texas to survey the area for a new Mexican land grant. The community was founded on December 12, 1851, when $1,000 were offered for land in what is now eastern Bastrop County. The first post office opened in October 1852. In 1860, Robinson was named one of the five townships that make up Travis County. At its peak in the late 1800s, Robinson was an important center for cattle and cotton farming in Central Texas.
