The Texas Army National Guard has been deployed in support of the United States military multiple times throughout history. The Guard has a long and proud history of giving back to society, both through service and through donations. In 1916, the Texas Army National Guard was called to deployment in World War I as part of the American Expeditionary Force. In 1951, the Guard was again called to active duty for Operation Dusty Tooth, which was conducted in response to the Korean War. The following year, the Guard was mobilized for Operationxus II in Support of NATO’s East-West Summit. In 1973, Guardsmen were mobilized for Desert Shield/Desert Storm as part of U.S.-Soviet relations. In recent years, it has become increasingly common for members of the Texas Army National Guard to deploy with their unit abroad as part of humanitarian efforts or peacekeeping missions. These deployments have included deployments to Haiti (Operation Tomahawk), Bosnia (Operation Joint Endeavor), Kosovo (Operation Allied Harvest), Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom). Throughout its history, the Texas Army National Guard has always given back to society by donating items such as uniforms and equipment, shelter and food rations, toys and games, generators and other supplies necessary during deployment. This tradition began more than 50 years ago when individuals from our state pooled their money together to purchase a tent for use during maneuvers at Camp Bowie near Robstown. In late 1916, the Texas General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the organization of an army in Robstown. The first regiment of Texas Volunteers was organized on December 1, 1916 and was known as the "Red Raiders." In January 1917, the regiment was redesignated as the "2nd Battalion, Texas Volunteer Cavalry" and served in World War I. The 2nd Battalion, Texas Volunteer Cavalry returned to duty in World War II. It was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, Texas Volunteer Cavalry on September 11, 1942. The battalion served in both World Wars II and Korea. On July 15, 1951 it was reorganized into a brigade-level unit and became known as brigadier general (later lieutenant general) John W. Hobby's 3rd Brigade Combat Team (3BCT). On October 9th that year it deployed to South Vietnam with 5th Brigade Combat Team (5BCT) for Operation AirVietnam III - The Battle for Saigon. It continued combat operations until its withdrawal from South Vietnam on January 30th 1973.
Robstown is a small town in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Robstown were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1795. The name "Robstown" comes from a Creek word meaning "hillock with arms." In 1836, General Sam Houston's forces marched through this town during the Mexican-American War and camped on what is now Main Street. In 1839, one of Houston's successors as president of the United States named Robison purchased land here and built a cabin known as Log Cabin No. 1. On July 3, 1865, Confederate general Robert Ewell's army attacked and destroyed most of Houston near Robstown while supplies were being transported by wagon train to Fort Bend county for use against Union troops under General Burnside. This event marks one of history's pivotal moments—the end of Reconstruction in America and the beginning of white rule over African Americans. During World War II local resident John Tipton organized a bombing campaign against Japanese targets inside Japan using captured U-2s flown over the war zone from American bases in Texas
