Rockwall is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The name "Rockwall" comes from the Rocky Mountains. Rockwall was founded in 1851 by Colonel James Hogg as a station on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1865, it became the location for what is now known as Camp Bowie School and later Rockwall Air Force Base. During World War II, Rockwall served as an airfield for the United StatesAAF Eighth Air Force Ninth Circuit Air Task Force which operated out of Elmendorf AFB in Alaska during July 1943-April 1945. In 1964, Rockwall was chosen to be one of three towns in Texas to become part of the newly created Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area; it remains its only municipality today. The center of town contains a shopping mall and several restaurants and bars including J's Place steak house and Joe's Pub restaurant (now closed). Rockwall is a small town in Ellis County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The first documented reference to Rockwall comes from a 1786 map by Antonio López de Armas. In that map, Rockwall is listed as a "village" located on the border of Llano and Williamson counties. During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), skirmishes took place between American and Mexican forces near what is now Rockwall. In 1872, one of Rio Grande Railroad's branches crossed over the Trinity River just south of present day Rockwall. This made it possible for people living in present day West Dallas to buy land east of downtown Dallas without having to go through Houston or other cities. During World War II, many local businesses were active in supplying munitions for the war effort including Mrs Goode's grocery store which became known as "the Arsenal". Today, there are several small museums in Rockwall associated with different aspects of its history such as battles fought during WWII or related events that have taken place there like rock wall artillery range tours which take you inside some of these museums!
