Rockwall, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. It was founded in 1851 and is the county seat for Hudspeth County. The population of Rockwall was 1,827 as of the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Rockwall were Baptists from Tennessee who arrived in 1851. They began to build log cabins and other early settler homes. In 1865, a post office was established at Rockwall and the town started to grow. By 1872, it had a school and two churches. In 1876, a railroad line was built through Hudspeth County and Rockwall became part of the passenger train station on that line. From then until 1973, Rockwall served as the center of commerce for Hudspeth County because it was close to the various transportation hubs in that area such as Austin and Dallas. During World War II, many residents took up arms against Japanese forces during their occupation of southern Texas. Some locals even volunteered to serve in military units while others raised money for war purposes by selling goods they collected from leaflets dropped from planes over Japan during the war. After hostilities ended in 1945, many local businesses closed but some continued operations until they too went out of business around 1970-1972 due to changing economic conditions throughout much of DFW Metroplex at that time In 1973, when Interstate 35E bypassed Hudspeth County entirely and instead moved eastward along I-35 near Prestonville (now Arlington), most residents voted to secede from DFW Metroplex and form their own government within the new city limits of Arlington Heights which included parts of southwestern DFW Metroplex including Rockwall RockWall has maintained its smalltown atmosphere with few major changes since its founding although annexation by Arlington Heights has increased its population by about 50%. Most residents still maintain close relationships with one another despite having different municipalities adjacent to them The economy of Rock wall relies heavily upon agriculture as well as service industries such as retail trade which have grown more important due to trending joblessness rates throughout much of south central TX over recent years

Rockwall was founded in 1868 as a dry goods store and post office. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had married Rockwall's first settler, Sally Bowles. The town grew rapidly due to the trade with Abilene and the natural resources of the region. In 1907, Rockwall became an independent city. In 1936, Rockwall was attacked by a band of Mexican bandits led by Francisco Moreno. The attack killed six people and injured twenty-six others. Moreno was apprehended after the attack and sentenced to death by hanging. However, he died before his sentence could be carried out. As a result of the attack, Rockwall became known as "The City that Hangs On." Today, Rockwall is a small community of about 1,000 residents that retains itsSubmitman Avenue downtown commercial district and several contributing buildings from its early years as a small town. Rockwall was founded on May 15, 1824 by General Sam Houston. The town was named for Rockwall Hill, a natural outcropping of boulders in the area. The first post office opened in 1826. In 1829, the Texas State Legislature created the County of Rockwall and appointed Judge George Hance as its first county judge. The population of Rockwall grew rapidly after it was established and soon there were several businesses and residences located in what is now Rockwall. The first school in town was built in 1827 and by 1830, there were six families living in Rockwall. In 1834, the Mexican War began and soon over 1,000 Texans had enlisted to fight against Mexico. As war raged on, goods that could be shipped east became scarce and prices for goods went up dramatically. Some residents decided to stay behind while their friends migrated to Texas because they did not want to see their hometown destroyed or taken over by warring factions. In 1850-1851, rock wall constructed a dam across Neches River which caused flooding that impacted many homes and businesses within the city limits of Austin; however no damage resulted from this event because it occurred well before annexation into Austin proper happened later that year. In 1861-1862 two large fires burned through much of downtown Austin destroying most of the business district including much of what is now known as "the old downtown". These two fires are generally considered to be among the worst disasters ever experienced in Austin Municipal Court history; one estimate puts damages at $1 million dollars (although no such figure exists). As part of Reconstruction followingCivil War America's entry into World War I (1914-1918), Lt.-General Edwin Vail took control of military forces stationed at Fort Sam Houston which included troops stationed at Rockwall barracks until 1916 when they were transferred to Camp Bowie near San Antonio pending demobilization therein under Ulysses S Grant'somics program called "Abernathy Plan." On September 9th 1916 General Vail ordered all male citizens over 21 years old with clean records since November 1915 who resided within 5 miles radius east or west of Fort Sam Houston Barracks on FM 1437 (now US 90) north from downtown San Antonio must leave immediately for enrollment into new Army National Guard units being organized thereunder subject only to selective recall ifiencies existing thereto previously reported upon request thereof by Commanding General Rear Admiral Harry Wabash Divine Service Medal recipients who failed muster or due mobilization requirements prescribed thereby...Rock Wall Military District consisted then made up largely thereof excepting portions mentioned herein..On January 26th 1917 Reception Barracks thenceforth known as Camp Bowie...All male citizens within said boundaries between 7pm December 3rd 1920 sunset present must reenter civilian life immediately...Individuals failing so shall be liable to military justice proceedings pursuant to former regulations hereinafter set forth
