Roma, Texas is located in the Midland region of Texas and is bordered by Waller County on the east, Comal County on the south, Hidalgo County on the west, and Austin-Bergstrom Airport to the northwest. As of 2010, Roma had a population of over 930 residents. The Romani people are an ethnic group who originate from India. Many Romani people work in agriculture or other manual labor. Roma also own businesses and farms throughout rural areas of TX. The Romani community has been aroundsince the early 1800s. When wagon trains arrived in what is now Roma County in 1847 there were about 50 Romani families living there. In 1907 about 150 families lived there with a total population of 1,000+. In 1951 when TX statehood was granted to TX some settlers decided to move into new land near Rome because they thought it would be more agriculturally favorable than their original location. By 1961 there were over 1,500+ Romani people living in Roma Parish and surrounding townships including Rome itself with a population of 1700+. In recent years many members of the Romani community have left for various reasons such as identity theft or economic hard times while others have moved out of state due to increasing social isolationism among many Texans (e.g., anti-immigrant sentiment). However many remaining members continue to live in rural areas across TX even though they do not enjoy full citizenship rights under Texan law (citizenship can only be given to those born within Texas). Some Italian immigrants who arrived during World War II also settled adjacent lands that are now part of Roma Parish but did not gain full citizenship status until after their war experience had ended and most importantly because they did not suffer through Nazi persecution like most other European Jews who perished during World War II.

Roma, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,815 at the 2000 census. Roma is one of five towns that make up the tiny hamlet of Rome. Located on the junction of TX-87 and FM 359, it's a short drive from McKinney and Fort Worth. The first Europeans to visit Roma were French traders in 1821. A post office called Rome was established in 1825 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1861, Rome became a county seat when Hudspeth County was organized. The population peaked at 2,811 in 1920 but then declined to 1,815 by 1990. However, the current population has continued to grow since 2000 as more people move into the area for work or pleasure purposes. Roma is named after Giovanni Battista Romano who settled there in 1836 with his family and some friends. He started a cotton plantation which produced rice and other crops until he sold it in 1865 to James Hogg for $4,000 dollars$. In 1895, Hogg donated land for a Methodist church which became known as Saint John’s Episcopal Church today. Hogg also built an addition to the church that remains today as part of the building complex known as Old Roman Road Scenic Byway (TX-87/FM 359). For many years this road served as an important link between Carthage (to the north) and Roma (to the south). Today it is only used for local transportation
