On Dec. 10, 1922, the USS Lexington (CV-2) was launched from Naval Base Corpus Christi as the USS Lexington (CV-2). The ship had been ordered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and sponsored by Mrs. Margaret Sanger. On December 18, 1922, the Lexington reached her destination in Hampton Roads, Virginia where she underwent shakedown training before arriving at Norfolk on January 3rd 1923 for commissioning. During World War II, she served as flagship of Destroyer Squadron Twenty-Six and Destroyer Group Three Hundred and Fifty-Nine. She took part in the Pacific campaign against Japan from April 1943 to September 1945. The Lexington was decommissioned on October 15th 1946 and struck from the Navy list on November 1st 1947. The USS Lexington was sold for scrap on October 17th 1948 to Mr. Wm Hesseltine of Galveston, Texas who planned to use her for target practice purposes only until he could find a new home for her. The Lexington ultimately found new life with members of the Corpus Christi Yacht Club who restored her to her original beauty including painting and restoration of all original fittings including mast & rigging etc.. In 1984 she sailed down San Jacinto River to be used as a museum ship at Corpus Christi HSYC before being put into storage again until she finally arrived at our port in 2002 where we now harbor her!

She is also considered one of the most important warships of her era, being mentioned in both the Declaration of Independence and the Treaty of Paris which ended hostilities in 1783.
Roma, Texas is a small town in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. Roma is located on the east bank of the Missouri River and it was named after Romulus and Remus, two brothers who were sons of Marsyas and Rhea. The first people to live here were the Wichita Indians who came from Kansas in 1827 and built their village on a bluff overlooking the river. They left in 1828 when they were pushed out of their home by the Apache people. A group of Pecos Indians also settled here in 1835 and operated a trading post until about 1840 when they moved west to Santa Fe. In 1865, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show began its three-year tour through Angelina County and stopped at Roma for two days before continuing on to San Antonio. At that time, Roma had about 50 residents. In 1895, Rome became part of rancher Tom Litton's cattle market near Amarillo with other towns including Beaumont (now Dallas), Commerce City (now Midland), Garland (now McKinney), Hearne (now Irving) and Palestine (now Fort Worth). From there it grew rapidly as a farming community with ranching being its mainstay economic activity until 1957 whenzoners started moving into businesses such as banks and schools in nearby Arlington Heights orDallas which led to rapid growth within Roma over that period without any loss of original character or culture
