On December 12, 1960, Governor John Connally recommended that legislation be passed which would create a state guard system similar to that in Oregon. This bill was passed by both Houses of State Legislature and became law on January 3rd. The first national guard units were activated in Round Rock on January 6th. The units were composed of man power from various businesses and organizations within our community. These early days were difficult but we persevered with support from our local citizens. Throughout these years there have been many changes to our organization including: name changes; duplication of duties among different units; reorganization due to wars or other emergencies; change in mission or function; additions or deletions to our ranks due to population growth or military deployments; etc. However, our core values have always beenJROTC (Joint Reserve Officer Training Corps), patriotism, service and comradeship. Today we continue to serve our community through unit activation ceremonies such as this one honoring World War II veteran Harry Jorgensen who served with distinction at Fort Bliss near San Antonio

The first white settlers in what is now Round Rock were the Treaty of 1845 people from Kentucky and Tennessee who entered into a treaty with Mexican President Manuel Lopez de Santa Anna. They agreed to sell their land east of the Nueces River for $2 per acre to anyone who would make an offer within 10 years. Unknown to them, Mexico had already claimed this area for themselves and began construction on the Alamo while they deliberated over whether or not to give it up. In 1859, three men named John Hodge, James Minton, and Wm. Hogg started cattle ranching in what is today Round Rock Township. In 1871 they became known as The Hudsons because they bought 753 acres (280 ha) around present-day downtown RoundRock from David Aikens for $27 per acre ($ ).
