The Rowlett Coast Guard Museum is dedicated to the history of the Rowlett Coast Guard. The museum has a collection of artifacts and memorabilia related to the Coast Guard, both before and after it was merged with the Texas Rangers in 1951. One of the earliest items in the museum’s collection is a small metal case that contains an American flag and uniform insignia from 1892. The case was given to Captain John W. Gorman by his predecessor, Commodore James W. Hogg, on Valentine’s Day, 1893. In 1951, when the Coast Guard became part of the Texas Rangers, one of its first acquisitions was a large chest filled with memorabilia from its past. Among these were uniforms and equipment from both prior eras as well as documents and photographs related to coastal defense in Rowlett County during World War II. In addition to its history as a member of the Texas Rangers and later as part of the New Mexico State Police,the Rowlett Coast Guard Museum also preserves maritime heritage through its collection of vintage boats and vessels dating back to 1912-1914. These include Motor Lifeboats (MLBs), Beneteau Boats (BPFs), Catboat No 1 (CAT1), Cutters Jayhawker (CPJ2) and Raymarine RS-4A Sealand Scouts (SCS). Along with these older vessels are newer models such as Marineland Yacht Club Racer (#9013), Moody Boat #11012(Moody III) and Paddlewheel Freighter #8014(Paddlewheeler I). The museum also offers interpretive displays on various aspects of coast guard history including missions such as Search for Survivors off Galveston Bay in 1915 or 1942 or response to Hurricane Ike in 2008 or 2010. Finally, there is an exhibit highlighting local fishing techniques called “Fishing at Home: A History of Local Seafood Processing” which tells stories about local fishermen who have been working along our coastline for centuries.

The Rowlett Coast Guard station was established in 1917 by the Texas Department of Public Safety. The station served as a travel and communication center for law enforcement personnel along the Richardson-Goliad County line. In 1966, the Coast Guard Station was relocated to its present location on FM 2231 in Rowlett.
Rowlett is a town in Liberty County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite that now forms Rowlett was first settled by Germans in 1853. A post office called "Rydal" was established in 1855, and remained in operation until 1907. The name "Rowlett" was given to the community by Wm J. Rowlett, an early settler. In 1870, John Fenton purchased land at what is now Rowlett and developed it into a town. Fenton named his settlement "Rydal." The first store opened on October 1, 1870, and the first school opened on November 14th of that year. In 1875-76 John Hargrave built a log cabin near present day Rowlett which served as his home for many years until he donated it to the town for use as a public building. The first school also housed local government offices during this time period including a jail and courthouse which were added to the structure in 1955-1956 when Liberty County consolidated with Dallas County form an enlarged metropolitan area known today as Dallas-Fort Worth MSA
The Coast Guard has been providing services to the community since 1790. The first Coast Guard station was established in Duluth, Minnesota, on November 12th of that year. The United States Coast Guard was officially created on May 14th, 1917. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has played an important role in society by helping protect our coastline and maritime interests. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has made a variety of gifts to the people and communities it serves. Some of these include: - A jetboat called the Lighthouse Guardian which is donated by Boeing in memory of their fallen brothers and sisters in service - A lifeboat called USS Constitution which was donated by General Electric Company in memory of John Adams who served as President during the Revolutionary War - A helicopter which is donated by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in memory of CDR (Chief Deputy Commander) Darrell Easley who lost his life while operating this helicopter during a rescue mission off Long Island on July 5th, 2009
The Coast Guard gift history goes back to 1924 when the first Coast Guard cutter, USCGC A.G. Pierce was christened in honor of Rear Admiral John H. Pierce, Commandant of the Coast Guard at the time. The Cutter later served as CGC Arctic and CGC Mojave before being retired in 1972. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan dedicated the USCGC Gulfstream II to the Coast Guard for its invaluable roles in rescuing people and cargo from danger on our coastline. This well-tailored vessel continues to play a crucial role today with her MH-60R Black Hawk helicopters providing aerial search and rescue operations during storms or other emergencies along our coast.
Rowlett was founded in 1846 by Andrew Rowlett, a cotton planter and entrepreneur. The town grew quickly and soon became a thriving center for commerce and culture. In the 1860s, Rowlett was home to one of the largest slave markets in Texas. The market provided goods and services to slaves from all over the state. In 1881, Rowlett became the capital of Kenedy County, Texas. The county was named for Andrew Rowlett's brother-in-law, General John Faxon Kenedy.
