There has been a military presence in Rowlett since the early 1800s. The first military installation in the town was Fort Worth Arsenal, which was built in 1814 by General Sam Houston. The arsenal served as a training ground for Texas Rangers and the militia during the Mexican-American War. In 1846, Fort Worth became the capital of Texas and Rowlett became its second city. In 1912, Rowlett hosted the International Exposition and World Fair. A decade later, it welcomed its first U.S. servicemen when they arrived to fight in World War I. One of Rowlett's most famous citizens is Lt.-Gen. John J Pershing, who played a major role in leading American forces into World War II. After the war, Rowlett experienced rapid growth as a suburb of Dallas. Today, Rowlett is home to over 20 military installations including Army Reserve Center at East Valley Drive and Naval Air Station Joint Base Lewis McChord near Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBLH). These installations provide services to local communities through their Operation: Community Defense programs which include law enforcement activities such as arresting criminals and investigating domestic violence incidents; emergency preparedness initiatives such as providing health care for local residents during natural disasters; and national security engagements such as conducting airborne refueling operations or providing humanitarian assistance from airfields across America

The town's growth led to development of industry in the early 1900s including a cotton gin, bakery, hotel and grocery store; transportation improvements with a railroad station; and real estate development with homes for farmers, ranchers and other citizens. By 1925, Rowlett had become an incorporated city with a population of over 100 people. In recent decades Rowlett has experienced significant economic revitalization thanks to its location within two miles of downtown Dallas and its access to key highway corridors providing easy access to education and job opportunities throughout Greater Dallas/Fort Worth area
Rowlett was founded in 1881 by J.C. Rowlett and his wife, Fannie. In 1907, the Rowletts donated land to the city of Austin for use as a park. The original City Park was named in honor of the Rowletts.
