Saginaw is a town in Jackson County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Saginaw Creek. It was founded in 1871 by James P. Alexander and his family, who named it for their native Russia. The first store in Saginaw opened in 1872 and was operated by J.P. Alexander's parents, John and Catherine Alexander. In 1877, Saginaw became a city with its own government and library system when it annexed the neighboring towns of Hutchinsville and Wellston.* In 1907, the town trustees adopted a resolution to become an agricultural center because of its location near Prairie View A&M University (PVU)* In 1922-1923, Saginaw had an extensive renovation project that included building new streets and sidewalks; re-landscaping; addition of two churches; construction of a public works garage; installation of electric lights; and replacement of many old buildings with newer ones including several hotels such as the Starbuck Hotel (now called Renaissance),*and Denny's Furniture Store*. The Saginaw River was a major route of travel and trade in the Texas Panhandle for more than two centuries. The river served as a natural boundary between the Mexican land known as Nuevo Leon and Anglo-American territory called East Texas. The first Europeans to visit the area were travelers from Mexico who found the region rich in resources, including coal and oil. By 1836, several groups of Texans had settled along the river, but it wasn't until 1845 that Saginaw became a county seat. The town grew rapidly due to its location on an important trade route, and by 1865 it boasted an population of over 1,000 people. In 1873, Saginaw County was created from part of East Texas and included much of what is now Wichita County. In 1907, portions of Wichita County were transferred to Valentine County and then again to Saginaw in 1933.
