For over 150 years, San Angelo has been a thriving community and an important cultural center in the Texas panhandle. Today, San Angelo is home to more than 8,000 people and its economy is strong thanks to its businesses and its location on the fringe of the great Plains region. The city was founded by Anglo-American settlers in 1848 as a small town on the banks of the Salado River. The name “San Angelo” means “city of God” in Spanish, and residents from all over Texas came to live here during the 1850s as Methodists began moving westward from their original strongholds in Kentucky and Tennessee. By 1860, San Angelo had become one of the most successful towns in Texas because it boasted an effective local government that managed resources efficiently. During Reconstruction times (1865-1912), SanAngelo stood out as a thriving black community that defied stereotypes. African Americans were allowed to vote beginning in 1872, and they quickly became established members of society. In addition, many white men decided to move away after being defeated during Reconstruction – leaving behind some of Texan history’s most significant institutions like The University of Texas at Austin and The American Civil War Museum. In 1898, when Santa Anna took office as governor of Texas following his unsuccessful bid for president against Sam Houston, he declared martial law throughout much of the state due to concerns about Mexican control over much of Southwest Mexico. As a result, many Mexicans living in Texans counties were removed from their homes without formal process or trial and placed into concentration camps near Lubbock or Refugio while their families were taken eastward into Arizona or New Mexico Territory under US jurisdiction pending documentation proceedings Concerning their status as citizens thereof . In 1903-4 President Edward Murchison ordered United States forces occupying Veracruz Province south of Paso del Norte not only investigate allegations that Mexican agents were financing opposition elements among Anglo Texans but also take measures designed to quash any insurrectionary activity within this area; this led eventually to military operations known as OPERASA (Operation North Star). SAN ANGELO WAS ONE OF THE LOCATIONS INVOLVED IN THIS OPERATION . San Angeloians went door-to-door soliciting support for their elected officials who did what they could do short term while awaiting word back from Washington on whether operasa would amounting ultimately unto success or failure
