San Angelo, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Abbott County. The population was 986 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town began as a mission station founded by Father José Arguelles on May 29, 1836, to serve as an outpost for Mission San Antonio de Padua on the Mexican border. On July 20, 1876, San Angelo became a city under Act No. 334 of July 4th, 1886., with a population of 602 residents according to the 1880 census. In 1907 San Angelo adopted its first municipal charter which granted it full civil rights and self-government within Abbott County; this same year it also built its first public building - City Hall - which still stands today. In 1916 SAN ANTONIO BANK opened its doors in downtown San Angelo and quickly became one of America's most important financial institutions; it would later become part of BankAmerica Corporation). In 1938 SAN ANGELO absorbed neighboring Lubbock into its city limits making it one large municipality with over 1,000 residents On January 1st 1915 Mayor J.C Flood announced that sanAngelo had successfully petitioned Congress to annex more land onto its borders due to an increase in population growth in surrounding counties (Lubbock had already been annexed by sanAngelo) and because they felt their tax base was too small compared to other cities nearby The annexation was accomplished on February 14th 1915 when Act No. 346Chapter 2 Statutes Of Texas Annotated took effect bringing populations for all purpose purposes within City Limits including annexation of Lubbock (then numbering 723 people) More recently: The following years saw many new businesses opening up throughout downtown San Angelo such as CVS Pharmacy & Rite Aid followed by Philip Morris Cigarettes company headquarters opening in 2003 giving Downtown an even more Frank Gehry influenced look

San Antonio who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became governor of Texas. The original mission in what is now San Angelo was founded by Father José de Jesús Arcángel on July 24, 1836. After a visit from President James K. Polk in 1845, the town prospered and grew rapidly due to its natural resources such as oil wells and grazing land. In 1907, San Angelo became an independent municipality with a mayor-council form of government under which it continued to grow until it reached its current size. Today,San Angelo is a thriving community that offers excellent educational opportunities for its citizens as well as great economic opportunities both within and outside of the city limits.
