San Angelo is a town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the San Antonio River, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Austin and 80 miles (130 km) northwest of Dallas. The townsite was renamed SanAngelo in honor of Jules Ewing. In 1876–77, local miners mined natural gas near what is now downtown San Angelo while still under construction of the Transcontinental Railroad between Dallas and Los Angeles; this discovery led to increased development around downtownSan Angelo over time.
