The San Angelo Navy Yard was one of the first naval yards in the United States. It opened on December 10, 1841, and served as a navy depot until 1868. Theyard produced over 1,000 ships and boats between 1841 and 1870. Theyard closed its doors for good on October 15, 1870. In 1918, the Naval Weapons Station San Angelo became a part of the new United States Navy’s Pacific Fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu. In 1939, USS Edson (DE-314) was commissioned here as the first U.S. Naval Ship to come from Texas since Reconstruction began in 1865. During World War II USS Halsey (CV-8) anchored here while she underwent renovation at Austin’s Brown Shipyards before her commissioning on November 17th 1942 USS Wasp (AS-5) also took up station here during that time period before sailing to Midway Atoll in May 1943 just weeks after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor which resulted in America's entry into World War II USS Enterprise arrived at this site on December 5th 1945 after days of operations off Okinawa . She operated out ofhere until she decommissioned in September 1946

In 1836, San Angelo was the site of a skirmish between American and Mexican forces that began the Texas Revolution. The town was founded by Captain John B. Alamo and his family in 1835 as a result of their efforts to find a new home for themselves following the death of their father, alamora José de la Cruz y Asís. After spending several years exploring various potential sites, the Alamo family settled on what is now San Angelo in 1836. The town quickly became known for its livestock and mining industries, but it also attracted settlers from all over Texas to seek out property within its walls. By 1840, San Angelo had become one of the most important cities in Texas due to its location and population growth. In 1849, during the Mexican Civil War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his army to march on San Angelo with orders to capture or kill any American soldiers found in town. Despite being aware of this plan, Santa Anna instead marched his army northwest towards Austin instead. While waiting for his troops at an intersection near present-day Hidalgo Street and Don Pedro Street, local militia arrested many people who had gathered there to watch events unfold. This event is commonly called the "Battle of San Angelo" because many Americans died as a result of arrest or execution rather than battle wounds
