Air Force gift history in San Antonio, Texas began with the construction of Love Field Airport in 1947. The airport was named for General Curtis LeMay and became home to the Air National Guard. In 1955, the Air Force activated a Military Airlift Command (MACC) unit to provide airlift support for Army and Marine Units working in Vietnam. In 1966, MACC's 10th Airlift Wing was activated at Love Field and provided medium lift service to numerous embassies, military installations, and other overseas locations. San Antonio, Texas was founded in 1836 by the Republic of Texas as the capital of what would become the United States. The city has been home to various cultures and communities over its history, including Spanish, Mexican, English, American, and Texan. The current form of San Antonio owes much to its relationship with Austin – both cities are part of the same metropolitan area – but it is also a product of its own gradual growth. The first settlers in what is now San Antonio were immigrants from Mexico who arrived here in 1835. They built small huts on a hill near today’s downtown and called their community “Travis Rancho de las Américas.” By 1840, they had organized themselves into a town governed by a mayor and six councilmen. In 1845 they changed their name to San Antonio de Bexar (San António de la Paz). In 1846-47 an army led by General Sam Houston invaded Mexico under the pretext of liberating Texans held hostage at Monterrey. Houston was elected president that year after defeating Santa Anna in a popular vote; he set about forming an army to pursue Mexican forces out of Texas. When hostilities ceased in February 1848, Houston returned to SanAntonio where he began building his executive palace on Adobe Boulevard today’s Rice University campus. As early as November 1830 Padre José Hidalgo had proposed creating an independent republic for Hispanic Texans east of the Rio Grande River whose land lay within present day New Mexico and Colorado; this independence movement coalesced around Francisco Villa as leader with support from California merchants turned politicians James Polk and Tyler Cowen among others On July 8th 1830 Abilene native Manuel Armijo submitted proposals for annexation by Travis County [later Harris County] if approved by Congress although no action was taken until after President Andrew Johnson vetoed the measure In October 1830 Hidalgo sent a delegation including Villa to Washington D C where he met with then Secretary Shannon Acheson who replied that “the people down there want nothing more than annexation so I am not going to interfere ” It should be noted that while some Mexicans did favor independence from Spain (e.g., Vicente Guerrero), most wanted more autonomy within what became known as El Norte which encompassed most or all of modern Texas . Thus when President John F Kennedy announced his plan for statehood for all 50 US states on November 2d 1960 only eight days after victory in the elections that year, better-informed insiders knew Dallas Mayor Ramón Aguirre had made secret deals with JFK aides shortly before those votes were counted

The first European settlement in San Antonio was by the Spanish in 1718. The area that is now San Antonio was part of the Nacogdoches County and it was designated as a mission town on December 21, 1810. On February 2, 1835, San Antonio became an independent municipality under Mexican rule. It experienced some growth during the American Civil War but declined afterward. In 1902, San Antonio joined the Union as a result of the Texas Revolution and its annexation by Mexico prompted some improvement to infrastructure and city services. However, economic decline followed until the late 1990s when downtown redevelopment led to new business opportunities and larger hotel rooms.
