The history of San Antonio can be traced back to 1718 when Captain James Bowie and three other Spanish soldiers founded what would become modern-day San Antonio de Bexar. In 1836, Mexico gained independence from Spain and consequently Alamo City became Mexican territory. A year later Congress passed an act creating Travis County, including all present day Bexar County. In 1839 General Sam Houston decided to move the Alamo garrison southward along with some other military forces to help suppress an insurrection in East Texas led by John Fenton Wiley Jr.. On December 6th 1840, just days before his death at age 37 from natural causes at Mount Pleasant Ranch near present day White Sands Park in Starr County,[1] Houston ordered that the Alamo be destroyed[2][3] which it did not do until November 25th 1851 under orders from Ulysses S Grant during his march across Southwestern Texas during the Mexican–American War[4]. In 1861 San Antonio seceded from Mexico as part of ConfederateTexas because they considered slavery incompatible with their cause.[5][6] The Battle of Market Street occurred on April 19th 1861 when Union troops commanded by Colonel Braxton Bragg attacked Confederate positions around Trinity Church just north of today's downtown area; this resulted in heavy casualties for both sides with about 50 dead on both sides[7][8][9], effectively ending any hope for secessionism among Texans living east of Interstate 10. Prior to this battle many Texans had speculated that if war broke out between North & South then most likely SanAntonians would choose neutrality but instead chose side with their friends in eastern Texas who sided with Lincoln[10]. After General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865,[11] much discussion took place as to what should happen next with many feeling that Confederacy could have continued without losses but due to lackadaisical attitude by Confederate leadership failed miserably against overwhelming Union forces[12]; these events eventually led Congress to pass the Morrill Land Grant Act giving millions more acres (over 122 million hectares) westward into Kansas Territory (now Oklahoma).[13][14]
