San Benito, TX is a small town located in Webb County, Texas. The population was 5,454 at the 2010 census. The town is named after San Bernardino de Padua, which was once the largest and most populous city in Portugal. It was founded by Antonio Sanchez in 1868 as a sheep and cattle station on the upper Red River. In 1902 it became an agricultural center with large Rancho San Benito holdings that included 256 square miles of land and more than 6,000 head of livestock. The rancho went bankrupt during the depression and its assets were seized by the government in 1936 as part of General Land Sales. In 1946 San Benito received title to its name from Mexico; it had been given to Santiago Baca-Alvarado who had married a Mexican woman there in 1841. In 1978 San Benito won notoriety when two local high school students, Roy Wilburn and John Hinckley Jr., shot Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) while she was giving her first political speech outside a Tucson Safeway store. Giffords survived but Wilburn and Hinckley were killed by police before they could be apprehended or killed by prosecutors. A year later anotherlocal high school student, James Holmes (17), committed suicide inside his mother's home after shooting six people at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. These shootings have led some to call for gun control laws similar to those passed following the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012 which left 26 people dead including 20 children aged 6 or 7 years old.]]

The history of San Benito, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s. At that time, the area was part of Mexico and was known as Nuevo Laredo. In 1836, the United States acquired Texas from Mexico and renamed it San Benito County in honor of General John B. Houston, the first president of the Republic of Texas. In 1851, a post office was established at San Benito and mail began to be delivered there in 1857. A school was built in 1859 and became an elementary school in 1889. The town also served as a county seat from 1859-1865 and again from 1870-1875. In 1907, San Benito incorporated as a city with a population of 100 inhabitants. The first mayor was Wm. Hickey and the first council consisted of nine members. In 1912, san benito annexed portions of neighboring Hudspeth County to form a new city limits which had a population of over 1,500 people! During World War II,San Benito became one of the most heavily bombed towns in America with bombings happening on occasion for both military purposes and commercial purposes! However despite this hard hit lifestyle during wartime, no serious damage occurred to the town’s infrastructure or buildings other than some minor surface cracks! After World War II ended,san benito experienced rapid growth due to its status as an international tourist destination for its beautiful landscape and historical landmarks!
