San Juan, Texas is a small town in the Rio Grande Valley of TX. It is located about 25 miles east-northeast of Austin and is part of the Blanco County seat. The population was 1,682 at the 2010 census. The first European to set foot in San Juan was José de Jesús Galindo y Costilla on October 12, 1797; he named it after his patron saint, Saint John the Baptist. In 1821 San Juan became part of the Mexican Republic through a treaty between Mexico and Texas. At that time there were only three Mexican families living in San Juan: one from Zacatecas, one from Durango, and one from Pecos. In 1846 Don Antonio Peña y Meléndez founded Rancho Rinconada near present day San José de Escalante on what are now Utopia Road and Rinconada Creek. This rancho was later acquired by James Bowie who renamed it Bowie Rancho Santa Anna para las Indias (Santa Anna Land for India). In 1861 Ennis Hogg organized a cattle drive through central Texas which passed through San Juan on its way to Abilene. On July 24th, 1861 Hogg's group consisting of eighty men rode into town square where they stopped for dinner at the home of Francisco Romero before continuing their journey the next day westward across Slaughter Creek Bridge over Big Bend National Park into New Mexico Territory. It wasn't until 1870 when Lázaro Cárdenas purchased land east of present day San José de Escalante from Don Anacleto Díaz that Hispanic settlement began in earnest within what is now known as Greater San Juan area including parts of Utopia Road and Rinconada Creek areas today occupied by Hispanics such as Mexicans (Rinconadas), Guatemalans (Callejas), Dominicans (Barreras), Cuban Americans (Castro) and others since pre-Hispanic times when this area was uninhabited by any people other than those indigenous to this region according to oral history interviews with current residents done over the last few years by various organizations interested in preserving these cultural items within our community including Alianza Nacional de la Raza/National Alliance for Race/Ethnicity
In 1846, San Juan was the second town in Texas to be founded. The town was named after General Santa Anna, who had led Mexican forces against American forces in what is now Los Angeles County. The first post office was established in San Juan on July 1, 1847.
