The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the largest and most powerful militaries in the world. It has a history dating back to World War I, when it was founded as the American Military Airways Service. Today, the USAF provides air transportation for both national and international operations. Its mission is to support U.S. security and interests abroad, as well as maintain our own global airspace and deter aggression from other nations. The city of San Marcos, Texas was founded in 1836 by refugees from the Mexican War. The city's present-day boundaries were set by an act of the Texas Legislature in 1879. At that time, San Marcos included all of Victoria County and most of Hudspeth County. Today, only a small area within the limits of the City of Austin is still part of San Marcos. The original town site on what is now Utopia Avenue was home to about 100 people. In 1839, local landowner James Waddell donated five acres (20,000 m2) to the community as a land grant. Waddell also built a school and jail in the early years of San Marcos' development. In 1840, William Hogg donated another five acres (20,000 m2) to San Marcos for use as a public square. This donation helped establish downtownSan Marcos as one of the important commercial and social nodes in late 19th century Victoria County. In 1850, two brothers named John Sitton and David Starr donated sixteen acres (2600 m2) to San Marcos for use as a farmstead and general store. The Sitton brothers erected a large log courthouse which served as the town's first municipal building until it burned down in 1865. In 1941, the United States Air Force deployed the 1st Tactical Fighter Wing (1 TFW) at Eglin AFB Florida in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The wing was equipped with P-38 Lightning fighters and became operational on 11 December 1941. The wing flew its first combat mission against Japan on 18 December 1941. In 1942, 1 TFW participated in the Attack on Pearl Harbour which led to Japan's surrender. After World War II, 1 TFW moved to Okinawa where it operated from 1945 until its disbandment in 1949.
In 1836, the Mexican government sent a group of soldiers to San Marcos to quell a slave insurrection. The garrison at San Marcos was small and soon all the slaves were freed, making it one of the most important Free Texas settlements. Today, San Marcos is a sleepy town in El Paso County that is home to some of the country's oldest architecture and history. The first permanent settler on what is now San Marcos date back to 1827 when Captain Manuel Gomez founded a trading post called Alamo de las Flores (Alamo of Flowers). In 1829, Captain José Nunez founded another trading post on the same site, this time called Santa Clara de los Dolores (St. Clara of the Heart). Both posts served as Headquarters for Captain Gomez's Brigade during Mexico's War for Independence against Spain. In 1836, Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered General Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla to march on Texarkana and free all the Texans there. On July 6th, 1840,General Hidalgo reached San Marcos with 5500 men but found only 1000 Mexicans living here. He abandoned his plans to liberate Texarkana and marched back north towards El Paso instead. While marching through Blanco Canyon near present-day Alpine National Park, General Hidalgo came across an American camped out by Indian traders named John C Smith and David Starr Jordan. General Hidalgo decided not to attack these friendly Indians but rather return north without disturbing them any further. This event would later be known as The Battle of Palo Alto which ended in a decisive victory for independence for Texas over Spanish America
In 1836, General Antonio L. Armijo's brigade of Texas Volunteers invaded Mexico and drove the Mexican Army from its capital of Mexico City. The United States Recognized the Republic of Texas on November 8, 1836. San Marcos was founded on December 20, 1836 by Captain John Boggs as a post for military officers and their families who were evacuated during the Mexican-American War. It was renamed San Marcos in honor of General Armijo on October 6, 1840. The town had an population of 10 residents when it was first established and grew rapidly to over 100 by 1850. By 1860, it had reached 1,500 people and became one of the most important towns in Travis County. In 1865, it amalgamated with Austin to form the city of Austin.
