San Marcos is the smallest city in Texas and one of its most important historical sites. The town was founded by Captain José de la Garza, who named it for San Marcos, a small Catholic village in central Mexico that he had visited several times while on his way to duty as a captain in the Mexican army. In 1836, during the Texan-Mexican War, San Marcos sided with Mexico and was captured by General Antonio López de Santa Anna. He ordered its inhabitants to convert to Catholicism or be killed. One hundred and fifty-eight residents converted and were put into labor camps near Nacogdoches; seventy-six of them died there. After the war, San Marcos grew rapidly thanks to new technology: an irrigation system was built that allowed for large wheat crops; a train station was built; and two hotels were opened. In 1892, president Grover Cleveland designated San Marcos the county seat of Austin County; however, Austinville would remain the county seat until 1915 when it became part of Midland County. The turn of the century saw significant growth due to oil production in nearby West Texas. A hotel called The Palace began operations in 1910, becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in town. By 1920, San Marcos had over 1,000 businesses and over 100 citizens; it also boasted an expanding educational complex with four high schools (one private), two colleges (Texas Christian University and Lamar University), a hospital (McKinney Hospital), a post office (San Marcos Post Office), three libraries (Midland County Library System - now UTAustin Libraries), five churches (Catholic - now Christmastime Cathedral United Methodist Church - Trinity Episcopal Church - First Baptist Church - Methodist EpiscopalChurch) and six parks/resorts including The Basin which housed an opera house/theater/pool hall combo known as "The Palace" from 1912-1914/.
