The Santa Fe Navy deployed a gift to the community in 2006. The gift was an American destroyer, USS Wichita, which had been donated by the City of Wichita, Kansas. In 2006, the city of Wichita decided to give the Destroyer USS Wichita to the Santa Fe Naval Base as a gesture of goodwill and support for local military members and their families. Santa Fe is a small town in Chambers County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Santa Fe is the county seat of Chambers County. The name "Santa Fe" is said to be derived from Spanish settlements in the area during the 18th century and it has been spelled "Santafe", "Santiago", and "Santry". The original settlers of Santa Fe were Mexican Americans who arrived in what is now Chambers County around 1795. They called their new settlement San Fernando de la Salle because they had seen a group of Spaniards travelling through that area on their way to Zacatecas. In 1824, John White settled in what would become SantaFe and began trading goods with the Mexican Presidio of New Mexico. From here he started shipping goods up the Rio Grande to Texas via steamboats. In 1840, he built a sawmill on the Arkansas River which became one of the most important mills in southernTexas until it closed its doors in 1970. In 1847-48, 500 Anglo-American families moved into what would become SantaFe from El Paso and other parts of Texas as part of Manifest Destiny which aimed to bring white people into areas where Hispanics had already become established as farmers and merchants. Many properties were donated by wealthy Texans such as Sam Houston or Antonio López de Santa Anna so that these new settlers could have access to land, water resources, schools and infrastructure necessary for growing crops and creating businesses. The first post office opened in SantaFé on December 15, 1847; its name was changed to Santa Fe on July 6, 1850 due to objections from Pecos Indians who considered themselves part of Mexico rather than American territory). On November 30th 1865 an act was passed by Congress providing for congressional district boundaries within Texas but no action was taken until February 4th 1870 when James Murtagh formed a committee under Senator Stephen Fenton (D-TX) for this purpose which resulted in congressional districts being drawn based upon political considerations more than scientific accuracy/ease of administration/congressionalism instead of geographic realities unique to each individual county/township within TX

After only a few years, Santa Fe became an important trading center due to its location on the Rio Grande River. In 1821, Mexico achieved independence from Spain and Santa Fe became part of the new country. The city continued to grow rapidly during this time with many new buildings being erected including the State Capitol in 1875 and the original courthouse in 1883. By 1920, Santa Fe had a population of over 100,000 people and was home to several large businesses such as Guggenheim Museum, Texaco Refinery and Plaza Mayor. However, during World War II SantaFe saw significant damage with almost all of its commercial buildings destroyed or damaged. After the war ended, the city slowly began to rebound with numerous new projects being undertaken such as a park system and a new airport which opened in 1966. Today, SantaFe is an important cultural hub with multiple restaurants and bars lining Independence Boulevard North while downtown features a variety of shops and services including libraries, hospitals and universities.
