The Santa Fe Naval Air Station has a rich naval aviation history dating back to World War I. From the early days of the navy when USS Constitution and USS Maine patrolled off Santa Fe Bay, to today’s fleet of aircraft carrier platforms, NAS Santa Fe has played an important role in American naval aviation for more than two centuries. During World War II, NAS Santa Fe was home to the 5th Fleet's Aircraft Carrier Squadron (VA-5) and Naval Air Station Bethpage served as its subordinate station. The squadron trained Carrier Air Wing Five pilots for WWII combat operations from their airfields on Long Island until they were transferred to Japan in September 1945. NAS Bethpage operated Search and Rescue planes during the Korean War. In 1954, NAS SantaFe became Headquarters for Naval Air Forces Western Pacific which included Submarine Base Point Loma and Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. In 1960, Helicopter Training Unit Two was activated atNAS San Francisco and it is now one of the most significant helicopter training programs in the U.S.. Helicopter units have been relocated multiple times over the years but their final permanent home at NAS Santa Fe was announced on November 1st, 2013 and will be complete by summer 2014. Since its inception as a naval air station in 1911, NAS Santa Fe has played an important role in America's sailing navy through both operational deployments such as World War I and II when it housed carriers groups like VA-5 or VA-6; as well as prestigious international engagements such as Operation Neptune's Spear which saw USAF bombers support Navy SEAL Team Six during Operation Desert Storm against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq Army; or Operation Provide Comfort which resulted in Tomahawk missiles being fired from Independence Class destroyers at targets inside Afghanistan on October 2nd 2001 following 9/11 attacks

In 1912, the Santa Fe Railroad built a depot in downtown Santa Fe. In 1925, the railroad donated land to the town for a new school. The first building was built and named the School Annex. In 1966, the town refused to change its name to Albuquerque after then-Mayor Manuel Noriega declared himself head of Mexico City's government. So, the railroad donated another property in downtown Santa Fe to be renamed after its founder - Admiral John D. Stockton - on Christmas Day 1967. After Mexican independence from Spain was gained in 1821, Los Alamos National Laboratory was established there by order of President James K Polk in October 1849 as one componentof what became known as "the Great American Experiment".
