The Seguin Army Hospital was founded in 1912 by Captain James A. Love and Dr. George W. Hocking as a military hospital for the soldiers of the ill-fated Trans-Texas Railway Project. The hospital grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest in Texas and serving as the main medical center for all units of the Texas National Guard and Texas Army National Guard. In 1942,the Seguin Army Hospital became an active military base when it was designated Camp Bowie, TX by General Douglas MacArthur. In 1946, Camp Bowie was redesignated Fort Sam Houston (now Joint Base San Antonio) and remained an active military facility until its closure in 1991. The fort has been used as a variety of civilian institutions such as schools, hospitals and various research centers over the years. Today, portions of Fort Sam Houston remain open to the public as part of Park Row Historic District which is located adjacent to Joint Base San Antonio North on Ulysses S. When Texas acquired its independence from Mexico in 1836, it was a land of opportunity. One such entrepreneur was James Seguin, who began developing what would later become known as Seguin County. Seguin was born in 1794 in the Presidio of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico to Spanish nobleman Francisco Seguin and his wife María del Carmen Carbajal. When Texas became independent from Mexico on April 2, 1836, Francisco Seguin decided to move his family to Austin so that he could take part in the new nation’s development. He died less than a year later at age 54 after helping build the first courthouse in Austin. James Seguin quickly realized that this new land had great potential for growth. He founded what is now known as the James Southeastern Railroad Company in 1839 to provide transportation between Houston and Dallas. The company soon became one of the largest transporter companies in Texas because it could ship goods long distances quickly and affordably. In addition to his railroad businesses, JamesSeGuin also started several businesses that were important facets of Texans’ early economy: an insurance company (1841), a coffee plantation (1846), cattle ranching (1848), publishing house (1850), lumberyard (1851), grocery store (1853), and cotton gin (c 1840). These businesses helped create wealth within Texans’ families and society as a whole during this time period. In total, Seguin built more than 100 businesses over his lifetime; these successes are indicative of his strong business acumen and commitment to innovation.>>
