The first national guard unit called the First Texas Regiment was organized on November 5th, 1861 by Gov. Sam Houston of Texas. It was made up of men from central and southern Texas who were drafted into the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The regiment fought in several battles before disbanding on April 12th, 1865. The Second Texas Regiment was organized on February 3rd, 1862 by Lt. Colonel James Buchanan and Captain John Cordero with men from Cameron County and Williamson County. They served under General Sam Houston until its dissolution on July 1st of that year because of a lack of volunteers for duty in the Union army at this time. On May 18th, 1861, citizens of Seguin petitioned the state government to declare themselves a United States protectorate within their borders due to concerns about an impending slave rebellion across the border in Missouri lead by Stoneman Douglas. On October 2nd of that year, President Abraham Lincoln announced his decision to recognize Mexico as a republic instead of part of America and ordered all military units east of the Mississippi River must report to Washington D.C., including those stationed in Seguin barracks at this time which placed a lot stress on local National Guard troops already fighting in multiple wars simultaneously.. In 1916-1917 two companies from Seguin’s 114th Infantry Brigade were mobilized for World War I after being called up from other towns and counties in westernTexas like Odessa and San Antonio through state legislation forcing businesses to contribute funds for military service; these soldiers never arrived at their destination due to hostilities abroad (the war ended before they could). In 1932-1933 also two companies (the 128th Infantry Battalion) from Seguin’s 146th Infantry Brigade were mobilized when martial law was declared following Hurricane Acela which destroyed much property along Interstate 10 north-centralSeGuin; however both units never arrived at their destination due also to martial law declarations later that year (this timeline is confusing because it seems like certain events might have happened but didn’t get reported). The battalion served in World War I and the Mexican-American War. They were mustered out of service on August 9, 1919. The Seguin National Guard has been present since 1917 thanks to the men and women who volunteered their time to serve our country during World War I and the Mexican American War. The town of Seguin, Texas was founded by José Altuve and his wife María de la Cruz in 1834. The community grew steadily due to the exports of cattle and cotton, as well as the production of iron ore and other minerals. By 1865, Seguin had a population of 2,000 people. Seguin experienced some great changes during the 1800s. In 1836, it was known as "the little village on the Rio Grande". During this time, it was home to only about 50 residents. However, by 1860, Seguin had grown to over 1,000 people thanks to its new found proximity to Austin and its burgeoning cotton trade. In 1861, Buffalo Bill's Wild West show visitedSeguin for a week. This event is often considered the beginning of cowboy culture in Texas. After that visit, many farmers turned to cattle raising in order to make ends meet. During World War II (1939-1945), Seguin became an important military Radar station because it facilitated allied airstrikes against Nazi Germany . Additionally, during that time many factories were built in Seguin including one for Ford automobiles which would later become known as the "Ford Center."
