The Sherman Air Force Base was home to one of the United States' most extensive and powerful air forces during World War II. The base played a central role in the war, both as an operational center for fighter aircraft and as a staging ground for bombers and other attack planes. During the war, the Sherman Air Force Base also became known for its gift history. In 1942, when World War II began, the Sherman Air Force Base established a gift shop onbase in order to provide gifts to members of the military and their families. In 1945, after years of service at Sherman AFB, the United States dropped all nuclear weapons from within our country. This gesture was commemorated by creating an interior mural on base that depicted a Boeing 727 flying low over downtown Sherman with two nuclear missiles captioned "Drop All Nukes Now." This sculpture remains today as part of what is now called "The Bomber Mural" atSherman AFB. Since its inception, the Sherman Air Force Base gift shop has been a source of support for many local organizations throughout Texas. These organizations have included cancer research funds (Dartmouth Cancer Center), disaster relief (Katrina Relief Fund), veteran programs (Operation Homecoming) and much more. The shop has also become a popular destination for family photo ops and special events such as Christmas parties and New Year's resolutions meetings. In 1907, oil was discovered in Sherman County and development began quickly around the new industry.
