He ordered a contingent of soldiers to buy him a horse as a gift. That same year, General James Kentsworth donated two cannons to Sherman Army Museum. The cannons came from his home state of Kentucky and they are now on display at the museum. In 1876, General John Pershing visited Sherman and gave several gifts including rifles and horses to residents. That same year, Mrs. Annie Pemberton donated five war horses to the townspeople in memory of her husband’s death during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). From 1880 through 1890, Sherman became known as “The Arsenal of America” due to its many military installations including Fort Worth Air Depot (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base), Camp Bowie (later Camp Dallas) and Fort Sam Houston (now San Antonio International Airport). During World War I (1914-1918), these installations played an important role in munitions production and testing by providing materials for aircraft manufacturing plants across North America. From 1933 until 1945, works associated with Ulysses S Grant's White House period were conducted at Fort Worth Army Ammunition Plant adjacent to Mockingbird Lake near present day Arlington Heights in north Arlington County, Illinois Territory (the original post office for Arlington was renamed Mockingbird Point after Mrs. Pemberton's donation). From 1945 until 1949 it was part ofFort Snelling Armory which later became United States Army Garrison Command Post Chicago Rock Island Arsenal before being redesignated headquarters army post Chicago Rock Island Arsenal command center Decorah hereunder Decorah Army National Guard District No 2 effective Feb 6th 1950 [1]. During World War II (1939-1945), major contributions by individuals or businesses within southwestern Texas include: 1) $2 million contributed by Jock Johnston; 2) $5 million contributed by Ewing Graziano; 3) $10 million contributed by Harry Tilton; 4) $15 million contributed by Warren Sinkford; 5) over $50 million contributed statewide from 1944 through 1946 inclusive [2]; 6) nearly all donations received since 1954 have been no less than $25 per item [3]. However, due to its location on the Cross Timbers Interstate Highway system (I-10), which bisected much of Oklahoma at this time, Sherman continued to be very popular with tourists throughout much of its history until rediscovered by motorists in the late 2000s following increased traffic along I-10's corridor between Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston
