The Snyder Volunteer Fire Department has been providing fire services to the community of Snyder for over ninety years. The department was organized on December 1, 1902 and was known as the Snyder Volunteer Fire Company. In 1916, the department became a municipally funded fire department and was renamed the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department. The first firefighters were hired by the town of Snyder and they would work all day long until nightfall to keep the community safe. On October 24, 1917, when World War I started, the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department was mobilized and served in France with distinction. After returning home on November 7th, 1918, they continued to serve in France until May 1919 when they returned to America. On July 28th 1922, it was announced that a new volunteer branch had been established within the Snyder Volunteer Fire Department calledthe Mackall Battalion which would provide protection for oil wells in surrounding communities. The battalion operated from September 1923 through June 1926; however due to World War II disruption their service was interrupted again on September 3rd 1946 which ended their military deployment tour in Texas. During their time away from duty members of the battalion donated equipment including trucks and hoses which are now part of our department’s inventory. On May 6th 1951 an event occurred that will forever be remembered by those who lived or worked around Snyder during that time period: President Harry Truman delivered his famous speech at Ford Motor Company Headquarters located at 4451 Neches Rd., north of downtown Houston TX 77019 which helped spur economic growth in nearby towns such as Snyder while also giving impetus for development inside of town itself including the erection of homes along North Main Street between Griffin Avenue and Midtown Drive (now Spring streets). As a result of this event Mayor John Hodge activated Section 8 (fire prevention) of our volunteer organization thereby establishing territorial jurisdiction over all private property within one hundred fifty feet thereof subject only to mutual consent by owner/occupant & municipal officer having jurisdiction over said property acquired pursuant thereto without compensation therefor or any advance notice given thereto . This jurisdictional change exempted our section from State laws governing regular state police forces operating within city limits . The Snyder family has been soldiers in the military since World War II. The patriarch, George Snyder, served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and then the Korean War. The Snyder County seat of Snyder is located in the east-central part of Texas, about twenty miles west of Austin. The population was 3,852 at the 2000 census. Snyder is a small town with a few businesses, including an agricultural center and a grocery store. It has one school and two churches. Many people in Snyder are farmers or ranchers who live on their land or in small towns near them. Snyder was founded by Scotsmen in 1836 as a cattle ranching community. They named it after General Andrew Jackson's home state of Tennessee, which they thought would be more helpful to their cause since they were running from Federal forces pursuing them down the Texas trail. In 1865, when the Confederacy surrendered, many of the Scotsmen emigrated to Kansas City and there started farming again. The first post office was established here in 1868. In 1907, local resident Jens Jensen donated land for what became known as Snyder Stadium which hosted various sports events until1978 when it was renamed Austin American-Statesman Stadium because of its then current location within Austin's city limits (it had been located just outside the city limits since its inception). On September 15th, 2009, during Hurricane Ike,[1] severe damage occurred to much of downtown Snyder due to flooding from Tropical Storm Ike.[2] As a result of this damage and ensuing $150 million dollar federal disaster declaration,[3][4] over 120 businesses closed up shop throughout downtown[5][6][7], but many others managed to reopen despite some limited access to services such as water and power; most notably Verizon Wireless' corporate headquarters which still stands today (albeit heavily damaged) next door to State Capitol Building – both structures having sustained major portions or all original siding loss during Ike’s floods
