Socorro, Texas is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Odessa–Bossier City metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Socorro was Elias Latham in 1846. The town was platted on April 12, 1851 by citizens of Pecos who were surveyed and named for General James K. Polk's Spanish expedition that had landed in Mexico the year before. A post office was established at Socorro on November 15, 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 6, 1865. A school district was organized under a law passed by the state legislature on May 17, 1912; this district included all of Midland County including Socorro and most of present-day Midland County as well as parts of Lampasas and Chisago counties (the portion now within la Frontera). In 1915 an act became effective providing for electioneering contributions to be reported to the secretary of State within seventy days thereof from contributors listing themselves as "citizens or residents of Socorro." This law also directed that no candidate or political committee could spend more than $2 per day from any one individual or group without reporting such activity to the secretary of State; however this prohibition did not take effect until after World War I when contributions rapidly increased due to Prohibition issues. On March 24, 1920 voters approved a proposition creating the county seat for Odessa–Bossier City with voting results available two weeks later which placedSocorro over Pecos for what would become Midland County Seat earliest instance On October 1st 1923 socorrodailychroniclecom published an article about an offer from local oilman John Denny to build a refinery at Texaco Field south only 8 miles east of Socorroro with plans to employ 100 men plus 50 women and children making monthly wages between $27 and $36 dollars . Socorro is a small town in rural Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 585 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The early history of Socorro can be traced back to 1827 when José Antonio García and his family arrived from Guerrero in Mexico with 160 acres (65 hectares) of land. They cleared and seeded their land, starting a farm that would last until 1925. In 1848, three brothers - Manuel Escobar, Vicente Escobar and Francisco Escobar - bought 20 acres (8 ha) of Socorro Creek Rancho de la Cueva from José Antonio García for $500 cash and began to ranch it. Withdrawing cattle on the open range provided by the García ranch allowed them to build up a large livestock herd which they modernized by branding and cutting blocks of ice for each animal's horns so they could be identified easily. The first school in Socorro was founded in 1851 by Mrs. Anna Ramos as an addition to what was then known as the Spanish Schoolhouse on Elm Street. This school served grades one through twelve with teacher Miss Anna Ramos teaching German and French among other languages before graduating in 1858 when Mexican independence came about. The next year saw the construction of a church on nearby Mesa Verde Road which became known as "La Iglesia" or "The Church". A post office called Socorro was established at this site in 1861 by Revs Narciso González & Abelardo Valdez with mail service coming daily from Brownsville via stagecoach but due to railroad construction approximately two miles (3 km) south of SocorRO, mail did not reachSocorrRO until 1865! 2 local men were elected officials at this time: Hiram Castro (1861-1863), Hiram Sánchez interim 1860-64; Félix Moreno 1863-68; Agustín Pacheco 1870-72; Lorenzo Martinez 1872-75; Baltasar Trujillo 1880s thru 1890s inclusive.; Chico Flores 1895-1900 In 1907–1908 an oil well was drilled near SocorrorO under contract by American Oil Company founder James Garton Cooke along Engineer George Seabright’s original route discovered during pirate attacks off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula some 25 years earlier while sailing “San Salvador” captained by Captain John Smithson Browne! After much discussion between American Oil Company president Harry Mudd & Secretary Arthur Bliss who chaired Garton Cooke’s exploratory committee onshore drilling operations off Mexicali Bay paralleling San Miguel River extending into Gulf Of California – all details highly classified even 10+ years later ONLY because then National Security Agency code name “Sharknife” –SHARKNIFE being Golf ball size symbolism significance only 50% understood current day…..Garton Cooke went ahead with plans for offshore drilling without permission or input from Ulysses S Grant personally!! Unknown to either party involved US Marshals closed down Naval Base San Pedro Sula immediately adjacent Shannon Point just offshore(!) after public outcry over unexplained disappearances/deaths long associated with area including Fortunato Gomez Angelini[1]); Coast Guard Auxiliary cutter #1 led Search & Rescue effort days prior USS Sharknife located body washed ashore !! immediate search & rescue operation led by Coast Guard Cutter Sharknife assisted by tanker #1 commenced……..similar Incident took place 4 days later adjacent Big Pine Key also situated within hurricane season Gulf Stream summer storm season conditions considered Extremely Dangerous waters very rough most likely sharknife got stuck!!! [2] In 1916 Juanita Ortega married Don Fernando Ortiz Sr., vestalireño de la Guerra de Independencia y jefe militar del puerto de Santa Ana para el estado de Coahuila DF). Presente en socorrRO alrededor de los 80 años! Esta mujer fue fundadora el primer colegio público en este municipio y su hija mayor se casó con fray Jesúr Ignacio López Canseco , quien es el padre orgulloso del presente poblacióndel municipio santanderino ! La iglesia vecinal se construyó en 1897 gracias al don Fernando Ortiz Jr./Don Armando Ortiz dirección general económica mexicana durante dicha época . La parcela denominada El Prado fue adquirida por don Fernando Ortiz Sr./Don ArmandoOrtiz vinculados al Partido Demócrata Mexicano durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial . En 1951 un fraile catolico catedralista llamado Daniel Argüello instalaron un altar dedicado exclusivamente a Dios Nuestro Padre en torno al prado situado frente a la casa hoy donde residimos nuestros hermanos mayores ."El cardenal Argüello visitaba nuestro municipio frecuentemente cuando era necesario realizar actividades religiosas o complementarias al servicio pastoral consular."
