Socorro is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,567 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Rio Grande just east of Nacogdoches and west of Monterrey. The Spanish name Socorro (meaning "sleepy bay") was given to the area by early Mexican settlers because they found no rest during long journey overland from Mexico City to El Paso. When they arrived, they found that an armada of Spanish warships had been destroyed at Veracruz and their supplies were running low. To make up for lost time, the Mexicans began building settlements all along the riverbank where there would be plenty of water and wood for fires. One such settlement was founded by José María Cisneros in 1836 as Socorro de las Islas (Isle Socorro). On November 5th 1839, Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered General Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla to march on Socorro and burn it as an act of revenge for his defeat by Santa Anna at San Jacinto. After considerable skirmishing with Confederate forces near SocorRO throughout December 1840-January 1841, Santa Anna withdrew his army from Texas after learning that he would not be able to retake Mexico City without help from Spain. In October 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina while Union troops were attacking Fort Donelson in Tennessee), a group of local men banded together and decided to stay put rather than leave their homes when orders came through not to move until General Ulysses S. Grant could arrive with reinforcements. A smallpox epidemic started around this time also made things more difficult as many people died due to lice or other infections brought over by travelers who had stopped in SocorRO while on their way back home. In January 1865 Union general James Longstreet arrived at SocorRO with 1,500 men after hearing about General Robert Ewell's crossing of the Arkansas River into Texas some miles downstream and threatened to burn everything down if anyone didn't come out with him immediately; about 60% of the town's buildings still remained standing following Longstreet's arrival! By February 1865 most everyone had fled except a few hundred men who held onto what little food they could find before being evacuated again soon afterwards under cover of darkness.. On July 17th1875 Samuel Morse set off a sparkplug wire across US 93 near Bismarck Junction which caused an electrical fire that burned for three days; it is said that one man died as a result! In 1984 two pipelines exploded adjacent to each other close enough for sparks flying between them to cause extensive damage including destroying several homes; both accidents are now known as Pipeline disasters inSocorrRO! oil spills have occurred sporadically ever since then but thankfully these seem rarer than earlier events!

Socorro, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 7,686 at the 2010 census. It was founded on October 1, 1846 by pioneers from New Mexico. The name of the town is Spanish for "safe harbour". The first post office in Socorro was established on December 12, 1847. The first school in Socorro was opened on January 3, 1850. In 1860, the railroad arrived and helped to spur development in the area. On October 1, 1846, a group of Mexican Americans set out from Socorro with enough supplies to establish what would become known as Rancho San Rafael de las Alturas. They were met by local farmers who donated food and water and formed a community called Los Alamos which grew around them. On November 5th of that year rancho San Rafael de las Alturas changed its name to Socorro after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's order for allSpanish- speaking people living east of the Rio Grande to move west into US territory or face punishment under law. The original land grant for Rancho San Rafael de las Alturas included part of present day Hudspeth County as well as Bossier Parish and La Salle County present day south of Interstate 10 northwest of Austin. The town started off as a cattle ranch run by José Márquez y Arreguín and his brothers Francisco y Josefina Márquez y Pacheco with about 100 head of beef per month being produced back then including some hands raised by their father Jorge Márquez Sr.. A courthouse was built in 1865 but it burned down in 1865 also leaving only ruins behind today including an old cemetery which still contains remains from those days.. In 1875-76 Mr James Hinton started construction on what would become Town Hall Square just northwest corner between Main Street and Gadsden Avenue today’s downtown square just before Railroad tracks crossed Main Street near First National Bank building now known as Dodds Federal Savings & Loan Community Center
