Socorro is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The earliest known residents of Socorro were Spanish colonists who founded the community in 1847. The first school was built in 1848 and it served as the only school until 1907. A post office was established in 1851 and remained in operation until 1959. In 1902, a railroad station was built and became an important stop for travelers on the Old San Antonio Trail. In 1893, Socorro incorporated as a city under the name of Socorro East; however, it reverted to its original name after two years due to lack of support from the community's citizens. In 1926, socorro had its second incorporation attempt but again failed when only 1% ofitizens voted in favor of incorporation. The Texas Legislature re-established Socorro as a town on December 20, 1930 following passage of House Bill 1092 by then-Representative J B Hufnagel and Senate Bill 371 by then-Senator Clyde Teague with assistance from then-Governor James Maughan. The new municipality included most of what is now Hudspeth County except for portions near Round Rock which were annexed into Austin during that same year. On July 25, 1951 local resident "Tex" Tipton organized a “ resistor” group to resist UPI’s plan to take over much of west Texas radio stations including Socorro FM (two miles east of downtown). This courageous stand helped preserve freedomof speech within our great American society - one example I could give you about every day!

The Socorro Valley is a Panhandle town in Carver County, Texas that was founded in 1859. The name comes from the Chacoan word "socorro" meaning "safe place." In addition to its location on the edge of a valley, Socorro had other advantages over other towns in its vicinity. It was located less than two miles from the Chaco River and had access to water resources. Additionally, it had a strong military presence due to its location near Fort Sumter and Fort Stockton. The town's growth can be traced back to 1859, when George A. Brazelton built a cabin here and started trade with the local Native Americans. In 1865, SocorROboro became one of four towns in Carver County designated for voting by residents who were not landowners. By 1870, Socorro had acquired a school and post office, boulevard and jail, and several businesses including wagon shop, bakery, cooperage and flour mill. At that time it also began developing into an agricultural center with crops such as cotton, cornmeal and sorghum being grown along with cattle and sheep. However, World War I interrupted these activities; however following the war many new businesses opened up including hotels/motels catering to soldiers stationed at nearby Camp Bowie; this led to increased traffic through the town which eventually caused some problems for officials trying to keep up with demand. Following World War II most of the old commercial buildings were demolished but some saw use as housing until they were torn down in the late 1990s or early 2000s; however much of what remain today shows evidence of Socorro's history including its unique architecture which has been preserved via historic restoration efforts
