Socorro, Texas is a small town located in southeastern New Mexico. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Socorro County seat. The name "Socorro" means "sorrowful one" in Spanish and has been used by the Puebloans for many years as their name for this community. The first European to mention Socorro was Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1539 while exploring the Chihuahuan Desert. He called it Estancia San José de la Cruz and later Socorro, which means "the place where saints are born." The area that would become Socorro County was first settled by Native Americans about 12,000 years ago. The Puebloan people were very important in early Mexican history because they played an important role in the development of both Coahuila and New Mexico. They also built some of the earliest known villages here including San Jorge and La Venta. In 1819, Rancho Los Alamos was purchased from Manuel Antonio Castro by James Fenton who named it after his uncle General James Fenton who had fought against Spain during the Mexican-American War. The land around present day Socorro was owned by various families until 1868 when it became part of Rancho Santa Fe National Land Grant to Fray Gerónimo Torres y Arellano. In 1912, George Witte donated an acreage west of La Venta to be namedafter him as well as other donors throughout NM for what would become Garden Valley Park District #2]. That same year, another donation from Witte added 640 acres east of La Venta to become East Village Park District #3]. These donations formed what is nowEast Village Park District #4]]. On July 1st, 1916 Congressman John Lewis Moore filed House Bill No 2277 seeking incorporation of East Village into SocorRO! This bill failed but marked a turning point for East Village as it helped spur local business growth which continues today with over $120 million invested in businesses within EastVillage since its establishment! In 1926 Ranger Genealogy Company began operations here offering inexpensive genealogical services! In 1951 Rangers Donny Deutsch started operating an all night drive thru service called “Donny’s Drive Inn” on US 90Th Street near Old Spanish Trail]]. Today Ranger Donny still operates this truck stop serving customers along US 90Th Street!]]. On November 3rd 1950 Sheriff Harry Ladd launched “Ladd’s Gulch Patrol” which patrolled Long Canyon upstream from SocorRO]], helping keep residents safe during times of drought.]]

As part of the celebration, USS "Tribune" sailed into San Francisco Bay for a ceremonial inspection by then-Secretary of Defense James Forrestal and Mayor Dianne Feinstein on February 2nd 1946. Since its inception as the United States Naval Forces Far East in 1892, the Navy has bestowed many awards and distinctions upon friends and adversaries alike. Some notable achievements include: The Presidential Unit Citation awarded to America's heroes at Iwo Jima; Silver Star Awards presented posthumously to servicemen killed in action; three Gold Medals awarded by President Franklin D Roosevelt for bravery during World War II; two incapacitating wounds received from gunfire while serving with distinction aboard DDG-3 off Okinawa during World War II; two Distinguished Service Medals awarded posthumously by Presidents Harry Truman and Eisenhower; numerous honorary doctorate degrees conferred by universities throughout America including Yale University; seven Congressional Gold Medals dating back to 1907!
