By 1850, Socorro had become an important commercial center with its own post office and several stores. It also became home to some of America’s most skilled artisans including leatherworkers, goldsmiths and shoemakers. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Socorro began to experience widespread crop failures due to drought and lack of rainfall. This led to increased poverty among local residents and a decline in commerce which contributed significantly to the towns decline beginning in 1865. However, despite these problems, Socorro continued to grow until 1880 when it reached its peak population size with over 1,500 people living thereabouts. However during this time period as well as other periods throughout its history there was significant violence and social unrest which has caused occasional blockades and skirmishes between rival gangs vying for control over local businesses or neighborhoods
In 1849, Socorro County was organized. The county seat was located at San Felipe. In 1907, the county was renamed Socorro County after José de Jesús "Chico" Revilla, a naturalized Mexican American who had fought for Texas in the Mexican-American War and in the Texan Revolution.
