In 1862, Antonio Gonzales opened a general store which became the nucleus of Socorro's early commercial life. It was here that Juan Pablo de la Concha first exposed coffee to the area and began to make significant advances in its production and marketing. By 1870, Socorro had a population of about 100 residents and an active retail trade with Santa Fe.
Socorro is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,536 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. As of 2000, Socorro had a total of 17 churches and religious services available to its citizens. The city has been named after Spanish explorer José de la Cruz who discovered it on November 5, 1839 while exploring the route from Nacogdoches to San Antonio. The first settlers in Socorro were four men and one woman who arrived on July 16, 1836 along with their family wagon train from Fort Worth. They named their new settlement Santa Fe de las Palmas Creek because they hoped to find a rancho for themselves there. That didn't happen until 1840 when Manuel Armijo established himself as the town's first postmaster and started issuing land deeds. By 1849 there were over fifty people living in Socorro. In 1847 Mexican droves brought large quantities of cattle across the Rio Grande into Texas during thecomegada bullion rush which created an intense demand for food in Mexico City which caused prices on goods exported to skyrocket and forced many Mexicans out of business or into poverty. This also led to increased immigration by Anglo Americans seeking jobs in burgeoning Texan cities like Austin and Dallas-Ft Worth-San Antonio where wages were much higher than at home so many individuals decided to move westward., During this time period Socorro was primarily an agricultural community with few inhabitants other than farmers working around the small rural communities near them such as Pecos and Chama that grew corn, wheat, beans, cotton, fruits and vegetables growing close by for sale or trade back East.. In 1850 twenty five residents bought land from Joses Fonseca east of present day Socorros railroad tracks forming what would become known as "the First Indian Community". Agricultural production continued until market crashes in 1929 & 1938 combined with Dust Bowl years dealing lasting damage both physically & emotionally throughout much of American Southwest knocking thousands off their homes including most everyone living within 25 miles (40 kilometers)of any major city during those times; however due largely to government intervention through Jr Wartime Aid programswhich began immediately followingWWII efforts reversed some aspects of these disasters….. [1] The arrival of Interstate 20 (I-20) added even more traffic onto I-10 creating challenges for drivers trying navigate around curves & turns making it unsafe for all types of vehicles especially trucks thereby exacerbating conditions already wrought by decades’ worth of poor planning & engineering…. [2] In 1969 socorros only school closed due lack funding but reopened several years later using donations received thru various means thruout socorrors history…. Socorro is a city in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Webb County. Socorro has been settled by people from all over Mexico and Central America who came to work on the ranchos in the area. The first post office was founded in 1879. In 1907, Socorro became an independent municipality and incorporated as a town. It lost its autonomy again in 1912, but regained it in 1945 when it merged with nearby Lubbock. In 1957, Socorrow merged with neighboring Abilene to form the current city of Abilene and incorporation into Texas as a separate state entity took place on September 15th that year.

The town became an unincorporated community after the construction of the San Antonio-El Paso Railway (SAP) between San Antonio and El Paso made it possible for people living near each other to buy goods they could not get locally or sell their produce at local merchants
