The first people to live in South Houston were the Creek Indians. They occupied the area from what is now downtown Houston to the mouth of the Buffalo Bayou. The Spanish began to arrive in 1693 and by 1718 they had built a chapel on San Jacinto Square. The town was named for General Antonio de Texada, who fought against Mexico in 1836. In 1845, Houston became an incorporated city with a population of 20,000. The Texas Railroad Company built its line through Houston and South Side streets became known as "The Arches." In 1907,Houston hosted the World's Fair which drew over 150 million visitors.
