South Houston, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Harris County. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-largest city in Texas and one of its most populous metropolitan areas. South Houston is located on Buffalo Bayou and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Climate Classification Cfa), with average monthly temperatures ranging from 77.2 to 89.4 degrees F (24–34 Celsius). The area now known as South Houston was first settled by African Americans during the 18th century as part of what is nowHouston Heights. The town name derives from "Houston" – an enslaved black man's nickname – which means 'place where hogs are killed'. In 1836, General Sam Houston founded San Jacinto Parish in present-day Harris County and named it for his ancestor, James Houstoun who had fought for independence from Spain in 1805. By 1840, white Texans were beginning to settle in what is now South Houston as well; including some who had been driven out of Austin by Indian raids or war efforts following annexation into Texas by Mexico keyboarded their names onto homes there such as John Seguin and Antonio Marxi - this neighborhood still exists today as East Grand Parkway within South Houston limits. As cotton became more important to the economy of Texans during the 19th century, slavery gradually came to an end throughout much of America while Texans continued to import slaves until 1865 when they were abolished nationwide under President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation two years later. In early 20th century, development took off along Buffalo Bayou towards downtown due to waves of immigrants coming through San Antonio looking for work opportunities; many Italians followed suit and began calling themselves Italian Canadians rather than Americanized Mexicans or Spanish Americans because they felt like their rights had not yet been fully granted by American society.[1][2] This development led to a new type of community: ethnic enclave communities where residents share similar cultures but live separate lives outside major urban areas due to poverty or sectarian violence that flared up among these groups upon meeting each other for the first time. In the 1840s, Texans started to settle down in South Houston. Some of these people were farmers who brought their animals with them and began to graze cattle and hogs. Others were entrepreneurs who founded businesses in what is now South Houston. The first business was a tailor, which was established by John Browning in 1849. After a few years, Browning decided to open a store himself instead of subcontracting the job out. This led to other entrepreneurs opening businesses, such as A&W Root Beer Company and J.C.'s Fresh Fish & Seafood House. By 1870, there were around 100 businesses operating in South Houston. The early 20th century was a time of change for South Houston because it saw waves of migration from the Midwest. Many African Americans came to Texas during this time and started working on farms or as laborers. This gave rise to new cultural norms that would be felt throughout the city for many years to come: black people used white people's stores and restaurants as their base of operations; they drank alcohol at all hours; they danced all night long at local ballrooms; and they smoked cigars (mainly called menthol cigarettes).
