The Southlake Army National Guard is one of the largest and oldest military units in Texas. The unit was organized on November 25, 1865, as a result of the American Civil War. It was among the first combat units to be activated in Texas. The unit fought in many battles during the war, including Battle of Globe Hill and Siege of Fort Hood. From 1861-1865, the Southlake Army National Guard served as a state militia regiment under Confederate captain James Biddle. After the war, it became an all-volunteer force under Provisional Governor James K. Polk. In March 1866, Southlake Armory was leased by the Southlake Grange for use as an armory and soldiers were mustered into service there that month with Companies A and G from Dallas County. On April 1st, 1865, Company H from Wichita Falls was also mustered into service at Southlake Armory along with other companies from various counties in northeast Texas to form battalion VI (later brigade VI) of the 2nd Infantry Regiment (5th U S Colored Troops). On July 10th 1863 Captain John Gist's Battery D of artillery arrived at Corpus Christi Bayous near Galveston Island for shipment to Mobile Depot but never got here due to bad weather and finally arrived on December 15th after more than two weeks delay - so this battery has been erroneously counted among batteries listed here! Army gift history can be traced back to 1861 when Confederate captain James Biddle purchased land east of town which included what is now known asSouthlake Armory Site #2 which he used for storage and his personal army arsenal until he sold it in 1868 to local citizens who paid him $500 cash for it! This armory complex buildings still stands today within walking distance of downtown southlake! In 1865 following President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation all slaves in Arkansas were free & this gave new impetus to westward expansion by our Union allies!! We soon started receiving donations both large & small from individuals & businesses throughout our great Nation!! This continued until April 9th 1915 when World War I began!!! Our Unit received its first donation through then Mayor Wm Ladd who through his efforts raised over $4000 !! However we didn't stop there we quickly became involved with many functions such as dances etc which helped build our community name up even more !!! Many people have contributed over time including WWII vets (e descendants), members of Congress (representatives), mayors etc making us truly one community item !! It wasn't just members or family members that donated items but civilians too often times those who had nothing else to do or wanted something special for their loved ones !!! We are extremely proud Of everything that has happened at Southlake ARMY NATIONAL GUARD since its activation especially because it reflects positively upon our community & these past few years have seen amazing things coming !!!! It's becoming increasingly difficult not only To find Members or family But also Individuals willing To Donate Items Or Help Out !! What A feeling Of Community !

Southlake, Texas is an unincorporated community in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 697 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most established areas in Medina County and has been a center of commerce and culture for many years. Today, Southlake remains an important commercial center within Medina County thanks to its location close to Interstate 10 and various shopping centers including Woolworths/Tesco/Kmart/JCPenney etc.).
