Southlake, Texas is a city located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The population was 2,643 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and has a rich coffee history dating back to its founding in 1911. The first coffee shop in Southlake was opened by Johnnie Brinkman and Harry Hargrave. The shop became known as the Coffee House on Main Street. In 1922, J.B. Nichols opened his own coffee house called Nichols Coffee Company on Elm Street near I-635 which remains open today as an iconic landmark in Southlake. In 1954, Don Freeman opened Freeman’s Grove Coffee Shop on FM 1960 just north of US 175 in what is now the City Park Shopping Center. This were where many famous south Texans such as Bob Hope had their morning caffeine fix before going out to work or playing golf during what was then dubbed “The Good Old Days” of Southlake Starbucks history! Freeman also served as Mayor of Southlake from 1957 to 1962 and he left behind a lasting legacy when he decided to start Open Market Coffee Company which continues today as one of Houston’s leading independent roasters! Southlake is one of nine towns in Tarrant County that were annexed by Dallas in 1978. The first settlers in what is now Southlake were Methodist Episcopal missionaries who arrived in 1853. In 1875, J.M. Black and Company built the first cotton gin in Texas and it still operates as a mill today. The oil industry began to play a significant role in Southlake's history after developers bought land around an oil well remaining from the Barnett shale gas field discoveries of 1974 and 1975. The town was founded on December 17, 1976 as part of a effort to develop adjacent areas surrounding the wellhead facility known locally as "The Well". As production increased at The Well and other nearby wells during the early years of this century, Southlake quickly became an important center for oilfield activity within Tarrant County and throughout North Texas. As global economic conditions deteriorated following World War II and petrochemical production increased along with it across much of America outside of urban centers such asDallas/Fort Worth proper, many residents voiced their concerns about impending environmental destruction brought about by chemical operations conducted within their community boundaries smaller than those mainstay industrial facilities then located just east of downtown Fort Worth –locally known informally as "The Hills". To provide some counterbalance to these negative sentiments among some citizens concerned about potential environmental degradation brought on by industrial operation emanating from "The Hills", elected officials hatched a plan called Operation Clean Sweep which aimed to reduce domestic material waste produced within limited geographic confines associated with each individual business operating within any given corporate district thereby reducing or eliminating any potential threat to public health or safety posed by such materials leaching into groundwater supplies beneath municipal streetscape locations throughout southcentral Tarrant County between 1965 through 1978 inclusive."Operation Clean Sweep" ultimately succeeded beyond expectations resulting not onlyin dramatic reductions during its four decade duration but also creation or increase[d] awareness amongst business owners both statewide & nationally regarding personal responsibility towards nature & others

However, economic pressures began to take their toll in the 1970s and 1980s, leading to a decline in population until recent years.
