Southlake is a census-designated place in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Southlake is located on State Highway 69 just east of downtownDallas and north of Plano. The community was founded by Southerners who moved to the area in the 1920s after several years of farming in what is now Arlington County, Texas. The first post office opened in 1927 and served residents of Southlake Village and North Oak Cliff until it closed in 1959. The original Southlake Shopping Center was built on this site in 1960 and became one of the most important shopping districts in Dallas during that era before being replaced by nearby Fairview Mall later that decade. After Fairview closed its doors for good following a fire which destroyed much of its mall complex, local businessmen purchased the property adjacent to Interstate 20/69 and began developing it into what became known as "the Strip." In 1969, Southlake annexed portions of Garland and Irving Park which gave it a total population of 1,138; however, this number only grew significantly after annexation because many new subdivisions were developed around Southlake Boulevard (I-20) after motorists could no longer get to their homes easily from those sections through ramps leading off I-20 or Interstate 25 southbound). Since then, annexations have become less common but have not stopped completely; as a result, there are currently 2 duly designated communities within boundaries formerly defined only by US Highway 69: One includes all or parts of Flower Mound to the east while another includes all or parts of Deer Park/Lakeside Heights to the west (the latter including some urban areas lying within city limits). Southlake's economy has always been primarily based upon agriculture with some light manufacturing mixed among these sectors over time; however retail development has become increasingly important since 2000 when neighboring Flower Mound annexed much needed open space near Loop 610 interchange adding jobs directly thereto while also providing easy access to I-20/Loop 610 via two freeways – thus making home cooked meals an ever more popular commodity for Texans living near major highways! As word spread about how difficult life had become for many locals because their economy simply couldn't keep up wit increased competition from elsewhere within Greater Dallas Area - especially surrounding counties - citizens banded together forming various organizations such as "South Lake Eagles" formed back in 1971 specificallyTo fight against outside encroachment onto their community's ability to provide quality education for their children without fear that they would move away if things didn't improve - something which clearly hadn't happened yet despite growth rates well above average throughout entire municipal government during entire early 1970s!!!
