Southlake is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 11,985 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest municipality in Tarrant County after Fort Worth. Southlake began as an agricultural community in 1881 on the site of present-day Southlake High School. In 1916, Southlake became a town after it was annexed by Arlington Heights. In 1954, Southlake merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form a new city. The merger led to the creation of a two-tier government with City Hall and the Arlington Heights Police Department located within the new city limits while all other government functions were placed within South Lakeshore Mayor/Council which operated independently from City Hall. The original name for South Lake was White Sands but because of objections from some residents who thought that white sand would make people look foolish in public, it was changed to South Lakeshore in order to be more innocuous and less likely to offend those who objected to its use as an alias for Arlington Heights. In 1984, voters approved merging with Garland and voting then passed an ordinance change making it illegal for any individual or business entity other than those specifically authorized by City Council to sell liquor without first obtaining a license from City Hall; this ordinance remains in effect today (although limited sales are allowed at Bars on Main Street). This prohibition has helped keep downtown south of Dallas looking nearly unchanged since its inception while also limiting development west of I-35W near Interstate 610 which would have had negative consequences on both downtown redevelopment plans and adjacent properties east of I-635 north of Loop 1604 virgin land undeveloped until now thanks largely to this prohibitionism. Today’s south side is home to several high-end restaurants such as Blues Joe’s BBQ & Steak House (opened in 1969), Zushi Zona Japanese Restaurant (opened in 1978), The Ritz Carlton Hotel & Casino’s Hooters restaurant (opened 1998) and PNC Bank Stadium where University of Texas Longhorn football games are played each fall According to Forbes magazine's 2018 list "the fastest growing cities", Southlake ranks No. 9 out of 125 municipalities across America based on population growth rates over five years between 2016 and 2018 alone!
