The Texas Army National Guard was established in 1907. It became an independent branch of the Texas government on December 15, 1912. The first unit to be organized was the 2nd Infantry Regiment, also known as the Green Beret Regiment. The regiment was composed of volunteers from Stephenville, a small town northeast of Austin. The 1st Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment was organized on October 14, 1918 and served until it disbanded in 1919. On January 12, 1923, the 1st Battalion (3rd Infantry) of the Texas Army National Guard was reorganized as a battalion and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHQ-1). The battalion itself ceased operations on November 16 that year because it had been too ill-equipped to fight in World War II. On February 10, 1936, HHQ-1 was redesignated again as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), TXARNG. On September 30th of that year become part of newly created 5th Brigade Combat Team which reported directly to General Courtney Lucht Field HQ at San Antonio AFB. From there HHC relocated to Fort Sam Houston where it remained until relieved by elements of Task Force 101 on May 20th 1945 due to wear and tear from combat with Japan throughout 1944-45 campaign; finally relieved by elements of Task Group 114A on June 251945 after over three months occupation duty at Camp Nelson California . HHQ later served with 3rd Brigade Combat Team from 1951-1957 before being reassigned back to Ft Sam Houston for administrative purposes only 1958 through 1962 when brigade headquarters relocated back to Stephenville permanently under command Major General John Fenton USMC commander 1959 thru 1964 having concurrently assumed Commandership over all field units activated since 1907 including 5th Brigade Combat Team which reverted back to organic status 1966 thru 1970 while still reporting directly TO G CFPT Inactivated: 1969 & 1971

The Stephenville, Texas military unit was formed on December 12, 1846. The unit was called the 1st Regiment of Cavalry. The regiment was organized and raised in Stephenville by Colonel James Fenton and Lt. Col. David Sibley during the Mexican-American War. The 1st Regiment of Cavalry fought in the Battle of Palo Alto and Siege of San Francisco. They also served at Monterrey and Santa Anna River campaigns. In 1853, the 1st Regiment of Cavalry left Texas for California to help suppress a populist uprising there that led to violence. They were replaced by two other regiments when they returned to Texas in 1855-1856 due to lack of volunteers from Texas for the Mexican-American War era cavalry service requirements. They served at various points until 1861 when they deployed to Fort Worth, Texas as part of General Sam Houston's army during the American Civil War (the 1st Regiment fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville Court House, Malvern Hill, Wilderness etc.). After their war service ended in 1865 they disbanded again and reorganized under new command on December 12th 1865 as 2nd Battalion cavalry (F) assigned to 4th Brigade Combat Team 9th Infantry Division activated on May 22nd 1966 at Beaumont Army Air Field (now Beaumont Enterprise Airport).

This led to renewed calls for restrictions on gunpowder production following the war although no such regulations were ever put into effect. After World War II it slowly recovered both economically and socially with more recent arrivals coming forward to help rebuild; however, it has remained significantly smaller than prior generations since most people have located elsewhere in Central Texas or outside the state altogether since then.
