The Sulphur Springs Coast Guard Station was founded on December 1, 1892. It was the result of the merger of the two predecessor stations in early 1890, Fort Worth and Saline. The original station was located at what is now downtown Sulphur Springs. On February 24, 1907, the station moved to its current location on White Sands Boulevard. In 1914, a fuel storage tank became the first building on the property. The present station complex consists of a barracks and three buildings: a command post, an engine garage and a lunchroom/dining hall. The coast guard has played an important role in keeping our community safe since it was established.

Sulphur Springs, Texas is a small town in the extreme northwest corner of Texas. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso-Chihuahua, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's namesake comes from its location on Sulphur Creek in what is now San Antonio County (later Hidalgo County). When white men first arrived in this area in 1824 they discovered blacksmiths working on making steel weapons from old cannons and pistols. They called this place "Sulphur Springs" because of the sulphurous smell emanating from several springs nearby. Sulphur Creek was later known as Buffalo Bayou and became a waterway used by both Native Americans and settlers alike for transportation, irrigation purposes, and commercial fishing. The creek also served as a route for stagecoaches moving between San Antonio and New Mexico City. Due to these various uses, Sulphur Springs grew rapidly over time becoming one of the most important towns in west Texas. As oil began to be unearthed near Sulphur Springs during the late 1800s, businesses mushroomed aroundoil drilling rigs that were located along Buffalo Bayou. By 1912 Sulphur Springs had become an important refining center for oil products being shipped eastward via rail across America until production peaked in 1933 when oil prices collapsed due to World War II shortages; however, local production continued until about 1970 when it all stopped after widespread damage caused by Hurricane Ike In recent years much of downtown has been renovated with new shopping malls housing art galleries and other cultural attractions as well as larger homes which have brought increased development pressure to town center which suffers from limited parking spaces available near historic buildings dating back to the early 1900s
