Sulphur Springs, Texas is a small town in Angelina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Sulphur Springs was founded on September 18, 1903 by J.B. Cline and his wife Emma Weatherford Cline with the intention of developing a water-based resort that would offer visitors fishing, swimming, and Shooting galleries. The resort opened its doors to guests on December 12th of that year and became known as "The Island Resort". In 1937-1938 the island resort closed due to WW II rationing and lack of funding which led to it being converted into an airfield for the USAAF during WWII which renamed it "Dakota Air Force Base" (later "Alamo Air Force Base"). The airport served as a military base until it closed in 1976 after being sold to Southern Pacific Railroad who later leased it back to the USAF for civilian use under various names including Alamo Municipal Airport until it closed again in 1996 when Sulphur Springs lost its charter from the FAA due to budget cuts. In 2006 Alamo Municipal Airport reopened under new management as Sulphur Springs Regional Airport which is still used today for general aviation purposes although there are no scheduled passenger services operating out of it currently. In 1907, they donated land to create an agricultural district that would include Sulphur Springs; this district served as the town's main source of income until 1945 when oil began flowing into Texas from the Gulf Coast. Over time, various business owners have additions or changes made to their properties within what is now called "the village". Today there are nine active businesses located within walking distance of each other - all with their own restaurants and shops (plus banks) - making it easy for residents to get around without having to leave their homes! In 1881-1882 Wm Kapp sold some rights to drill for oil at his place about 2 1/2 miles southwest corner Congress St & Elm St (later renamed State Hwy 265).
