The history of the United States Army in Sweetwater dates back to 1861. The town was founded on November 2, 1857 by Sam Houston and his men as a stop on their way to the Alamo. In 1862, after Texas seceded from the Union, General Robert E. Lee decided that Sweetwater would be his headquarters. As the war progressed, Confederate troops began to move into the town. On July 6, 1865, Confederate General Pemberton surrendered at Oak Hill near Sweetwater. After the war ended, Union soldiers burned all of Confederate weapons and supplies in Sweetwater. The townspeople were able to rebuild and returned to business as usual in 1868. In 1903, a new army barracks was built inSweetwater for use by the Texas National Guard. The barracks served as the nucleus of what eventually became Camp Hood during World War II. When Camp Hood was closed in 1945 due to lack of space, it was transferred to Fort Worth and became Fort Worth Arsenal later that year. In 1957-1959 an armory expansion project occurred which added a new hangar and other buildings adjacent to present day Hall Street Boulevard. This expansion greatly increased storage capacity for artillery ammunition manufacturers withinFort Worth and also made possible future development at Camp Hood including housing units for enlisted soldiers and officer housing units known as "the huts." In 1960-1962 an airfields Expansion Project took place which included construction of two runways parallel to Halls Street Boulevard (later renamed Airport Parkway) allowing for military jet training operations; this program ultimately led to Camp Hood becoming one of America's most popular tourist destinations with millions visiting each year until its closure in 1997 following 9/11 attacks). Today there is still active military training operations taking place withinCamp Hood although most recently using smaller jets rather than big bombers like those used prior thereto; however much of original infrastructure remains extant including Museum portions dating back over 100 years!

Sweetwater, Texas is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Bergstrom metropolitan area. The Sweeny River flows through Sweetwater and forms its border with Hidalgo County to the east. To the west it borders Williamson County and Comanche County. The community began as an agricultural outpost named Wiley's Station on the Sweeny River in 1876, named for George W. Wiley who platted the land that would become Sweetwater. A post office was established at Wiley's Station in 1881, and by 1890, Sweetwater had a grocery store and two churches.[1] By 1912, there were three schools: one public school (grades K-12), one private school (grades 7-12), and a Baptist church.[2] In 1916, Johnnie Crain founded JCTC Communications which served as the first terrestrial television service in western Texas[3]. In 1967, McClain Oil Company merged with Texaco Incorporated to formTexaco/Chrysler Corporation which also owned JCTC Broadcasting Company serving areas including Sweetwater until 1977 when it sold to Time Warner Cable.[4] The property where Sweetwater now stands was donated by Carlos de la Torre y Flores in 1978 after he bought Texaco's Houston headquarters from Time Warner Cable CEO Jeffrey Lichtman for $14 million,[5][6][7][8] becoming one of America's largest privately funded donations to philanthropy on that scale.sweetWaterToday

The townsite of Sweetwater is located on Lake Como between Telephone Row and Business Loop 1.sweetwater county government buildings are located on Elm Street between Third and Fourth Streets, while courtrooms are located on Second Street between Elm and Fifth Streets. The original courthouse burned down in 1907 but a new courthouse replaced it in 1928. Sweetwater is home to many famous Texans, including Sam Houston, David Crockett, James Polk, Kit Carson, Juana Castro Zapata (the daughter of Mexican President Vicente Fox), Prime Minister John Acheson and Congressman Lloyd Bentsen. The main shopping center in Sweetwater is known as "The Strand." It includes a variety of stores such as Sears, Kmart and Walmart as well as restaurants such as Carl's Jr., Hardee's and Taco Bell. There is also an outdoor amphitheater which can accommodate up to 20 thousand people for events such as concerts or regattas.
