Sweetwater is a town in Hood County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name "Sweetwater" comes from the Brazos River and its confluence with the Little Colorado River. The town was founded by Texans in 1836 as a trading post on the border of Hood and McLennan counties. The town was first known as Sweet Springs because of a spring that supplied water to settlers thereabouts for their horses and cattle. By 1845, Sweetwater had become an important commercial center due to its location at the junction of two major rivers - the Brazos and Little Colorado - which made it vulnerable to Indian attack and therefore necessitated strict military regulation by Texans under General Sam Houston. Ashtabula County was formed from parts of Hood and McLennan Counties in 1846; Sweetwater became part of Ashtabula County on January 1, 1850. In 1857, Battle Creek Railroad reached Sweetwater from Fort Worth through territory now included in Arlington County; this railroad helped makeSweetwater an important agricultural center during Reconstruction period following American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1870, Mayor James Hogg organized a small town governance system modeled after Austin's Town Council but with more power delegated to elected officials than currently exists in Austin today; Hogg's reforms were eventually repealed in 1889 when municipal government superseded county government within Hood County. Sweetwater was founded in 1849 by decree of the Texas Congress. The town was named for General James Bowie, who led an abortive attempt to retake Mexico from Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War.
