Sweetwater is a town in Chambers County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Sweetwater River, which flows through the town. The first permanent settler in Sweetwater was J.W. Maynard in 1859. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the river. In 1911, John Pemberton purchased land east of Sweetwater from the heirs of Sam Houston for $10 per acre ($100 today). Today's Main Street was originally called Railroad Avenue but changed its name to honor Pemberton during his lifetime and thereafter it has been known as John Pemberton Way in memory of him and for his contributions to sweet water history. In 1916 local physician Drs James Millingen and Clarence Ligon were both leased bythe Texas Rangers service to conduct experiments on white rats at their farm west of town named "Litton Labs". After World War I ended there was an influx of refugees (mainly German) who had fled Germany due to World War I – these refugees established themselves near present day Midlothian Park across from UTSA campus; they were known as "The Rotters" or "The Sourds". A year later (1917), Baylor University began offering courses leading up to their School of Veterinary Medicine program at what is now Midlothian Park Campus; this area now includes much of Sam Houston State University's Campus lands including Memorial Stadium complex where football games are played today!sweet water residents quickly attracted other businesses and people looking for new opportunities after Baylor started offering classes here; one such businessowner was Fenton resident Wm Atherton who opened Atherton's Grocery Store in 1917 along with another store (now First Baptist Church) soon afterward on Music Row just north of current day UTSA campus near Stauffer Arena! Other businesses built around this time include: The Armoury located south/west corner Of Main & Broadway Streets 1915-1920; Vera Barton Hardware 1915-1918 when it moved into its current location next door to First Baptist Church 1925-Present; Gentry Drug Store 1919-1920 which closed down after four years due to prohibitionist fervor among some citizens following prohibitionista president Woodrow Wilson’s signing into law that year prohibiting importation/sale/use etc., Alamo Brewery 1929-1933 followed by AleSmith Brewing Company 1933 until Prohibition ended that year too! Kenedy’s restaurant which operated adjacent thereto 1935-present…all these businesses took advantage or available space then available onMusic Row while also benefiting from agricultural production being done nearby such as cattle raising operations by ranchers like Lloyd Boggs 1924- Present… all these businesses still operate today! SweetWater is located northwest of Austin proper on Interstate 35W between San Antonio de la Plata Airport and Slaughtertown Cemetery (#5). According to2010 US Census data'SweetWater has a total population 1,898'. Its boundaries correspond roughly with those currently defined by ZIP code 78765.'Accordingto2000 US Census data,'SweetWater had 2298 housing units.'
Sweetwater was founded by Captain John Sweet in 1836. The city was named for the stream that ran through it. Sweetwater became a trading post and general store on the lower Brazos River. It grew rapidly during the 1840s, thanks to its location at the head of navigation on the Brazos River and its access to goods coming upriver from Mexico and Texas. In 1846, SweetWater became an independent republic when Texas seceded from the United States. The Republic of Texas lasted until February 12, 1848, when it was replaced by the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas.
