The United States Air Force has a rich history in Taylor, Texas. The community is home to the largest air force station in the world, Travis Air Force Base. The base was first established in 1947 and is one of the oldest military installations in Texas. It was also suggested that Travis AFB be renamed after World War II veteran General Curtis LeMay. In 1994, General William "Willie" Hagan became Commander of Travis AFB. He began his term with many ambitious goals for the base. One of these goals was to create a visitor center and hangar to house more than 1,000 aircraft. In addition, he wanted to renovate Tennis Court 2 as well as improve infrastructure such as parking and restrooms on campus. In 1997, construction begins on Tennis Court 2 and it becomes operational two years later! As commander of Travis AFB, Willie Hagan made many strides for the community in Taylor. He revamped the airport and added new terminals which helped make it easier for visitors to access the base. He also renovated buildings on campus such asthe Student Affairs building and Recreation Center which are now used by the community as well as military students studying at Travis AFB. In addition, he created an airmen museum within Travis AFB which showcases USAF artifacts from all over the world! Today, there are more than 20 active duty USAF wings stationed throughout Texas including at Travis AFB! The winged emblem representing Texas hangs from every window inside of John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum in Dallas – just across from I-10! Taylor was founded by the brothers James and Jesse Taylor in 1827. It became a county seat in 1848. The town was named for General John Fenton, who fought in the Mexican-American War.
