Taylor's first school opened in 1881 as Central High School. It closed during the 1906–07 school year due to lack of enrollment. A new high school was built on what is now Prairie View A&M University's campus in 1911 and served as Taylor's school for many years before being renamed Highland Park High School after HH President Franklin D Roosevelt attended a football game there on November 7, 1936.
